I have gone to montreal 5 times, and if they think you have something your not supposed to, they will search and confiscate if it's an item not allowed, Alcohol, fruits, too many cigs or cigars. if it's illegal, you go to jail. If they ask and you lie, depending what it is, you can get in some serious trouble. i never had a problam going there, but comming back to the US is tough, even tougher now. Most likely they will search since 9/11....................You will have to pay taxes but you might be able to get it back at the border.

well, if you go buy something brand new and don't want to pay duty, get rid of the box if it comes in a box and hide the receipt. But you shouldn't have much trouble.
But they will ask you why and how long you're going to the states, so make sure you got a good story.

my parents go over to the states to shop all the time, whenever they get caught which is rarely its usually the story they tell that gives them away.
oh and one time when we were going to the states i dont know if it was a random check or something but they pulled us over for a full check, like they made us drive into some garage thing that had all this equipement to detect different things while we had to get out and wait. they also had like 4 people just searching through the car, but since we were going into the states we had nothing on us.

ok a few things
if you're going there, be honest abt how long you are staying. they have cameras on your plates to see when exactly you came in. dont lie!
if its clothes you're bringing back, throw it in your suitcase you're taking with you, lose the receipts, strip the tags off, and make it look used in your dirty laundry bag
if its not clothes, put it to use or make it look like it was needed on your trip or you had brought it along with you for the ride.
i recommend you do say you are bringing back some stuff if you do any other shopping, be like "oh, 75 bucks, here are the receipts" and have them ready. if you have nothing, they tend to question the purpose of your trip.
if they do find sthg and somehow prove you boguht it, ya just pay duties. if ya specify what exactly you're bringing back, it will be easier to help you out though man
as for stories, one time my dad told the guy at the border that we had a carton of cigs and we had to pay duty.
if you cooperate, are kind to the ppl and show proof and receipts, they are not too bad. be sure to have your citizenship papers and all that ****.
if you are uninformed, stutter and act nervous, they suspect ****. be a relaxed guy and you're fine bro
