there's not much you can buy for that price especially for a new 2004. The only cars that come off the top of my head would be maby a mazda 3(hatch), hyndai accent, kia not much more than that.
id get a civic if i were you, whiuch is why i got one, cuz i was in your shoes 8 months ago
ive driven the corolla, sentra, and echo
civic was THE best drive IMO. Do what ya can to get a civic, thats my advice. my cuz is always bitching abt her sentra, my buddy is complaining about the smell and brakes of his corolla. and echo.. none of my friends or family have made that mistake! haha
anyways good luck, civic anyday

for your budget, u dont have too many choices out there, maybe less than 10.
the mazda3 hatch's base price is already $20G + so it is out of question
maybe echo hatchback if u want a brand new car
i suggest getting an used car for your budget
u can pick up an used 2001 GTI 1.8T for around $18000-$20000 depending on mileage.
if u can wait, my friend is selling his high mileage 2002 RSX base in april for $16500

yeah i like vicLX's idea, buy a EK and strip the interior adn swap a motor
then u have a daily driver adn a part time track car

i suggest older gen car cuz u can find parts all over teh place if u are into modding your car
if u want a comfortable daily driver and dont plan to mod it, then get a newer ride (maybe brand new if u can throw out more coins)

get an echo. I was looking at the echo, before I got my civic. Echo's are not as cheap as everyone thinks though. I got one guy to price it out for me and it came up to like 19 G's and change (On the road price). That was for the 4 door though.
If you want a new car, get the echo, otherwise listen to the other members here and get an older car.
