thanks for the links. i had already found svrider.com, it has some info that helps me but not as much as you, being that you have a 650. i dont think the 1000 is mentioned anywhere on that site. it seems like its a really big australian/canadian/british site... or maybe its just me...
anyway, im finding some good stuff on 2wheeljunkie, and ill check the other one out too.

did y'all take the MSF course? i tried to sign up for it but they're booked for the rest of the year

i HIGHLY reccomend the MSF course. you can ride untill you take it, thats fine, but it would take you years to learn on the road what you will learn through the course. plus, you can probably take you license test at the end of the course. and a lot of insurance companies will give people a discount if they take the course.
definitly a "must do"

~yep wouldn't think of goin long w/o takin the MSF course....i was actually thinkin of doin it in another state just so i can take the class... i really don't care if it counts to get my liscense. but most states charge extra for out-of-state.
well i'll be doin some short distance stuff and come spring i should be ready.
how hard is it to clean carbs? both bikes have been just sitting in my friend's garage for a while so i'm sure i'm gonna have to take those suckers off and clean them(gas tank too).
i'm giving the older bike to my friend and i'm gonna keep the smaller one(a nighthawk...not a rebel).
has anyone takin the harley davidson class? i hear its pretty good...but its also like $300

i didnt know of the HD class.
cleaning carbs, i could probably do it my self, and should have on my Shadow cause it needed it. but i just never made the time and ended up trading it before i did it. if i had the time i could probably do it. i dont know how mechanicly inclined you are, but if you dont think you can, then just find your local Honda Motorcycle dealer and have them do it. My Honda dealer charges ~$52 per hour labor and they quoted me a 1/2 for the job. look them up and see what they say. whats it gonna hurt?
i dont know how your state works it with the MSF class but, PA charges you i think $15 for your class M permit, the MSF course is included in that, it is optional for you to take it, if you dont, its just your loss. then once you pass the course, you get your license, no charge, and youre good to go. the only other MSF class i know of is the advanced rider course. you have to pay for that(not sure how much), you have to be riding a minimum of 6 months, and you must use your own bike.
for anyone interested, check out http://motorcyclecity.com/Street-Talk/
there's all kinds of usefull info on there, and everyone is friendly

yah the HD classes use Buell blasts....
VA allows u to take a road test for ur M class.
Basic rider training is optional and is 100$ at a local community college...small price to pay tho...
its just a matter of gettin a class
i'll def do it in spring and i'll prob spend fall buying gear and gettin the bike ready and running then storage for winter.
i'm already thinkin of a second bike....
750 shadow ace or spirit
