94 Octane

This question is really only for my American friends...

What is the highest octane level available in the US...All I ever hear is 92.
We have 94 here and I was just wondering if you have it as well.

My D17 loves the stuff!

Highest I've seen around here besides race fuel is 94.

Why waste money though? I use 87 all the time.

highest ive seen around me is 93. but i havent really looked hard.
i used to put 87 octane in my car, and occasionally 89 to kinda clean it and pamper it a bit. and with 89 the car feels livelier and responds better. so i dont know about the dyno test or what octane they were testing, but i can def. feel a difference between 87 and 89.

Yeah, it's 93 around me too. I think I've seen 95 and 97 before, but that was somewhere in another state.

When I run 94 (every other fill up) I get alot better response from the car and for some reason it doesn't seem to burn it off as fast. Alot of people driving various other cars seem to agree with me on this. I run 89 every other week.

We have a spot here where you can get 114. I used to get it on race day when I had my old 74 Camaro. You put a 7 point boost in it and get 121...now that was explosive.

Fuel is made up of 2 different substances. Octane and Heptane plus additives. Heptane is a more expolive(not by much) and far less stable subtance under pressure(like in an engines cylinder). Octane and additives are used to increase the fuels stability under pressure t prevent knocking. Higher octane fuels. are actually less explosive by mass.

The Octane (anti-knock index) is a rating to determine how much pressure a fuel can take before self ignition.

Higher octane fuel actually lessens performance. The only difference is that very few fuel companies add the same amounts of detergents and other additives to 87 octane as they do to higher grade fuels.

Think about this. Dielsel is 112 or so octane fuel. Run that and see how fast your car goes

Running higher octane doesnt mean more power, or better response. It might actually mean a noticible(i cant spell) loss in power. Your engine is setup for a 9.5:1 comp ration correct. And 87 octane burns perfect, good emissions, and good overall power and fuel consumption. When you run higher octane its meant to be run with cars that have higher comp ratios. So if you run 92 on a car thats meant to run 87, even if you have intake and or exhaust or osmething, you wont notice a good difference. Its a placebo effect, you just think its working. It isnt actually helping your car one bit... Atleast thats what ive read and coem to understand through autoshop and such

If you have facts that go against mine, post em up, i would rather be wrong now and learn than to be wrong foeva

I have always been told that lower grade fuel contains "trash" sometimes that can build up and cause "carbon build-up". And if you use the higher grade, it burns faster/cleaner. I have always used the high grade fuel in all my cars and I don't see any performance increase nor do I see a decrease either. I say if you want to spend the extra "dough" get the good stuff maybe it really keeps things cleaner...That's the only reason I run it.

in Los Angeles its 87, 89, 91 (correct me if im wrong). but i heard its good to put 91 once a month to clean ur engine or something. it does seem like my car does feel better in acceleration with 91 and slow with 87. now i just put 89 the middle one. only 76 gas tho (the Fuel of NASCAR)

102 race gas here in NH. I run 87 only in mine. Anything higher is pointless and a waste of money in a civic unless turboed or supercharged.

I use 87 or 89. If you really think about it, the price diff. is not that big. You save like a dollar every time you fill up. Big deal.

That's California's octane #s for your everyday gas station. Not just LA. You could find higher octanes easily at race tracks.

It doesn't make sense to use anything over 87 and the engine compression ratio says it all.
