Rep Power: 0 How much boost does the WRX have?
I know these cars have the 227 hp stock to the crank and the new sti is 300 hp. but what I really want to know is what kind of turbo do they have and how much boost are they running threw the turbo. This of course wasn't listed on the subaru site. Any one know? Thanks
sorry if this should be in the auto ramblings.

Its actually 13.5-14.5psi, pushing through a TD04L-13G... its a VERY tiny turbo. The reason it has "lag" is Subaru's boost control. If you put a manual boost controller at 14psi on a stock WRX, the response imprves dramatically. How much boost you run really isn't an issue provided your fuel system can handle it. The WRX has pretty low stock compression, so it takes more boost to generate a given HP.
As for the new STi. Its going to be pretty stout at 300hp/torque. And, it will have a bigger turbo than the current WRX. The STi should be a tuner-party. A guy locally is running the JDM STi driveline in his WRX and making 376hp at all 4 wheels
That said, his car has a lot of money it in and I'd have bought something different for that price.
And about it being weak... compared to what?

Yeah it is a small turbo, so its good for take off, thats why its 0-60 is very impressive, but if youve been runnin with one on 1/4 time or freeway dont worry ull spank him...my friend has a Type R and spanked WRX on 1/4 after around 2nd-3rd gear and screamed VTEC all wayyy across that WRX....I saw those new NEONS spank a WRX on freeway also was embarassing. Anyways WRX runs very similar turbo set up to the 1st gen Eclipse's with the 14b turbo's very small but nice turbo can hold I think about 12 psi on stock motor and up to 18 on built...anything over that jus upgrade to 16g etc...and yes RX7 is about 8-9 psi stock

Rep Power: 0 Yep, also don't forget that the AWD hurts the WRX on the roll too. Nice for launching, but not much after about 3rd gear (check out the low traps).
Its a neat car though, especially as a wagon. And its got great aftermarket support too...
But stock boost sort of varies between 13.5-14... And you don't get the full boost until third gear. A popular upgrade is the VF30 turbo, which can flow much more air. Then you run into fueling issues, so you do the STi injectors. After that, its a matter of transmission and ring limitations. The tranny only can handle so much.

Yeah, actually 4th and 5th are both overdrives, and it feels like there is a gear missing between 1st and 2nd...
This was my wagon for about a year and a half before I got tired of driving the 5 speed in rush hour traffic at an average speed of about 20mph every day...

He is right. My WRX boosted up to about 1.2 MPs. I forgot how to convert MPs to Psi or lb. The gear ratio is really poor on the stock WRX.
