Personally, I bought my 01 LX Coupe used because it was in great shape and a great deal. I needed a simple commuter car, nothing more. Bigger wheels, sunroof, more power weren't a factor, which is why the LX fit the bill (I wanted an HX CVT, but they were harder to find).

Overall, I'm happy. The Civic has nice looking (to me) interior fabrics/textures, it rattles less than my 02 WRX that I sold. The Civic is cheap to own, and operate. Now, I could have looked for a Protege5, but things like bigger tires mean more money when it comes time to replace. Figuring that I've got tires costing about 40-50 bucks each on the Civic, I don't worry about them.

The 03 Corolla might be a better car, but its a little more boring than the Civic. Also, it doesn't come in a 4 dr, but thats not really an issue. Ideally, a HX CVT 4 dr would be my pick, but its not made

Bottom line for me was that I needed an automatic, and good gas mileage. FWIW, a Corolla would have cost me more to insure than the Civic, which in turn is costing me more to insure than the WRX (wagon). But, 32mpg is nice, the WRX was 22 at best, even with highway trips (damn AWD).

Besides, I'm wanting another sports car soon after I graduate, and with the way traffic is, having a Civic auto means I will get a manual transmission sports car.
