probably not enough threads/demand for a law forum, but i will make this sticky for now, until we can better determine the need.
so does this mean that a modified exhaust is legal since i have a muffler?
Every motor vehicle so operated shall be provided with a muffler or other suitable device to prevent unnecessary noise
MA
thanks saj

I'll have to agree with born2xLr8.
The laws around SOCAL suck hardcore. The onetimes will book your *** with all kinda fines if you get stopped and it all starts when they pull up behind you and see the exhaust.
It would be great to have a forum for this shiznit.

Yeah I know that the Naperville and Aurora area cops have tigher laws on noise from a moving vehicl then like the city of chicago does, it is mainly because they have nothing better to do with their time but to harass me but hey it is all fun and games.

If you really want to know about the deibel laws for your state / county then go to your local police station and ask them for the written law about it. I did this and I keep the sheet they gave me in my car at all times so that when I get pulled over I hand the cop the sheet when he asks about my exhaust and then he doesn't say another word because he knows he can't write me a bullshit ticket

as far as your exhaust as long as you dont have smoke or anything coming from the exhaust your fine. mostly sound wise we look for straight pipes on harley davidson motorcycles.
You should be fine with your Tanabe exhaust.

Actually in Aurora, IL we have the same kind of thing for exhaust, they can make you take it to a testing center and then, using a decibel meter, determine if it is to loud or not for a car. Motorcycle's don't fall under the same vehicle laws as cars. Also around my area the cops only do this to people with fixed up imports. I have seen many impala's, the old boat one's, go flying cops with open headers and no mufflers or cats, and all the cops would do is stare and say that is cool.

Let me rephrase, motorcycle's get a very huge leway when it comes to motor-vehicle law on the road, I have seen them get away with more stuff on the road, in front of cops, and if it was a car doing any of that they would have gotten ticketed

Well, you being a cop, do you ever chase a speeding motorcycle??? Full well knowing that if he lays it down two gears and throws the throttlw down he will leave you in the dust? I know most cops just let it go with saying, he will just end up killing himself, and yes I have actually heard those words come out of a few cops mouths when I was going on ride alongs.
