VW question, can anyone help???

hey...
ok...VW jetta 1.8T or VR6?? which of these would you choose with intentions to mod it....possibly a turbo upgrade or a supercharger.
ive tried to find some info about these 2 cars, but i cant find opinions. what do you guys think?

what is the better engine? ive been on a VW forum and there arent too many people with a VR6, but quite a few w/ the 1.8T...is that just because the 1.8T is cheaper or because its also got more potential? stock, its 180 vs 200HP...

any comments?

VR6... there are superchargers out (I don't know id there are for the 24V one yet, but there are for the 12V, so they can't be too far off)... and the European 6-speed is a much better tranny than the 5 speed in the 1.8T. There's also lots of hidden better things (bigger brakes, suspension differences, etc.... that you really have to read the numbers to realize). The thing you've gotta realize is you need six (instead of 4) of everything, so it will be more expensive to modify.

I'd personally go with the 1.8t, instead of the VR6. Mainly because the extra weight over the fronts wheels is something I'd like to avoid with a front wheel drive like the Gti, but that's just me personally. The 1.8t is also pretty easily upgraded: chip, full exhaust, and a turbo upgrade should put you around 240 - 250 whp. TQ numbers should be higher than the HP numbers also... so overall not bad.

both are fast, easy to upgrade, and are nice cars. you would have to decide. i drove a VR6 and it pulls all the way through the gears, with a simple supercharger it would pull like no other. the 1.8t however, pulls all the way through the gear (except the sluggish vw 1st gear) and then you get the added boost when it kicks in. a simple intake, chip, exhaust, possibly turbo boost control and maybe a blow-off valve is easy horsepower for the 1.8t. never dealt with a vr6 so i dont know how that responds to mods.

my pick, 1.8t wolfsberg with the sport suspension.

If you're looking to spend a little bit of money of mods go with the 1.8T. You'll get more power from less money. If you have a more cash to throw around, go with the VR6. You'll have to pay more for mods...but the power is MUCH greater. Plus, the exhaust note of a VR6 is GREAT .

My Vote: Go for the 1.8T

If your looking for one to mod, then definately the 1.8T. However, I test drove a Jetta GLI with the VR6 and 6 speed standard and I was impressed...one car to keep in mind.

I would take the 1.8T because it is lighter and I like the turbo sound. Also the stock 1.8T has been shown to handle at least 30 psi with good maintenece. My friend has one and I have driven in it. It is pretty quick and it can be a lot quicker. It has a lot more potential than the VR6.

i would take the 1.8t, it seems like it would be more fun to drive, and its almost as fast.

Okay, my dad owns a VR6, and I've driven the 1.8T at a dealer as well. So, I can can say that the VR6 is a little more fun to drive stock. However, APR doesn't make a whole lot for the VR6. They make EVERYTHING for the 1.8T. I talked to one of their engineers, and he said that in the new few years (but possibly as soon as this summer) they will start focusing a LITTLE more on the VR6. The 1.8T will probably still be their mainstay. The 1.8T has (as of now) topped out at 290hp with chip, upgraded turbo (stage 3,) and the full exhaust system. All thats out for the VR6 thats really been tested is the intake and exhaust. I don't know what type of numbers it will give you, and their chip for the VR6 isn't as good gain-wise as the one for the 1.8T. But, I like the elite feeling of having a 6-speed manual, so if you're in it for a while with this car, I'd go for the VR6. If you want to be doing crazy mods right off the bat, then definately the 1.8T.

thanks to all of you for your input. keep it coming!!

just a little more info on what i have in mind. im considering a jetta as one of the options for my next car after the lease on the civic runs out. i like the turbo, and that a 4 cylinder is probably more fuel efficient...but like white 2k2ex said it tops out at 290. i saw a supercharger (not sure if its for the current vr6 tho) but the stage 3 supercharger puts the VR6 at 320HP...havent seen a turbo for that yet, but i 6 cyliner cant be bad either way tho. plus the 6-speed tranny.

im looking to buy the next car, so modding it will be easier than a leased car.
i like the 1.8T, but dont really know. 1.8 isnt that much more displacement than 1.7...and we all know how fast the civic is. LOL
so im just trying to do some research now so i dont get stuck later on. thanks for all your help...keep it coming.

30 psi??? Holy crap. I thought our cars could only do 5-6 psi, so 30 sounds like a tremendous amount.

Be careful with the 1.8T engine right now.

VOLKSWAGEN AND AUDI TO REPLACE ALL IGNITION COIL PARTS ON 2001, 2002 AND SOME 2003 MODELS

Main issue, coilpack failures on the 1.8T engines, and the VR6, and a couple of others. This part fires the sparkplug. VW says its not a safety issue, but over at www.clubb5.com a guy had a picture of one of these coilpacks that had CAUGHT FIRE. VW says the new version of this part is fixed, I sure hope so.
