IMO 20mph would probably be about the highest you could drive. If you do go and try it out just make sure you're in a open field. Good luck.

Rwd? you can actually do some donuts j/k I step on it in reverse sometimes and my throttle gets stuck in the open position and I have to push the e-brake and brake at the same time then I just put it in nutruel it's kinda scary thats why I don't do it anymore. It happened twice already.

I was watching "High Speed Chases" on TV one time and I saw this guy that was on persuit, but he was going backwards and did pretty damn good too... They say he was going about 40 and it was like an early 90's car...

lol, you all crack me up

I think the gear for reverse is kind of a median between 1st and 2nd, i have a feeling your top speed would be about35,

And you all are crazy if you try

Actually, you could calculate it out, since reverse DOES have a gear ratio just like every other gear. Most times it's very close to what 1st gear is.

Hmm, this may be a rather retarded question, but I'm curious, does the speedometer show your current speed when going in reverse?

Yeah, whats with that noise anyway, is it there specifically so you dont go fast cause you'd get so damn annoyed with it?

dog cut gears. because they arnt helical cut like your forward gears reverse tends to wine. Thats the down side, up side is that they are much stonger and cheaper to produce. id really like a car that has dog cut gears in the first 3 gears or so, like the older jaguars. sounds pimp, plus allows for more tranny abus3.

The reverse gear also doesn't have any synchros. Hence, you can't (and definitely shouldn't try to) shift into reverse while you are moving.

That's correct. Most manual transmissions use helical gears for the forward gears and a straight cut (or dog cut) gear for reverse. That's why reverse is often noisy. The teeth on helical gears are cut at an angle to the face of the gear which reduces noise and stress. However, helical gears are more difficult to engage (that's where synchros come in to play). Many racing transmissions use straight cut gears for easy and fast gear engagement and because noise is not a consideration. Straight cut gears also rob less power then Helical gears.
