How To Launch?
How To Launch?
I just found out that my dad will teach me how to drive a stick. Now I don't know how to launch! Sorry if it's a stupid question. I'm use to learning how to launch in an automatic. Please help!
Heres some advice. Learn how to drive stick first. Its all about baby steps.
You first need to learn how to listen to the engine to know when to shift.
Btw, lauching on a 7th gen civic around 2800-3000 rpms yields the best results. Guys, correct me if I'm wrong.
Quick leason in lauching.
1. E-brake is OFF!!!
2. Clutch pedal depressed fully.
3. Put stick into first.
4. Give some gas till you reach about 3000 rpms and hold it!!!
5. Come off the clutch and give more gas.
6. Don't go into the "red" zone in rpms!!!
7. Shift again around 5800 rpms.
8. Drive safe and don't be a d**k on roads!!!

also, why are you gonna shift so soon? 5800? Try more like 6800 or somewhere around there.

learn it first, then youll have a much better idea on what to do. Nope, launching in 3000 rpm will result to a bog down because of the low powerband. Try around 5000-5500 rpm it works for me. Your staging really depends on your tires and magsize. For best results try different stages of rpm staging 4000,4500,5000,5500 see for yourself if your rpm will not bogdown after releasing the clutch and full press on the gas pedal after the initial staging. Staging above 5500 rpm will result to wheelspin (you apply throttle control if too much wheelspin occurs).
1.E-brake is Off.
2.Full clutch- shift to 1st gear
3.Staging time (hold up to your desired rpm)
4.release the clutch then press full the gas pedal - (do this as fast as you can)
5.Do power shifts (when shifting gears dont release the gas pedal, kick the clutch pedal then shift quickly to 2nd) on 7000 rpm- (our cutoff is around 7100-7200)]
6.Drive safely apply brakes if needed, hehe
Trust me, Ive been driving cars with sticks for years

Every one here is giving good advise! Learn to drive it first, pay attention to the sound of the engine and at certain rpm's. This way you never have to look down at your tachometer
Good luck!!

Pinoyexposed, what are you talking about? You want him to rev to 5500 rpm and then drop teh clutch. That is crazy. All he would see is white smoke because he would be spinning wheels for days and he would be seeing his opponents rear bumper.
If he launches at 3000 rpm, his car will not bog down. You will get a small amount of wheel squeal and that is it.

Just a thought, if you're just learning the stick, don't power shift. If you don't do it right or fast enough, you'll put a lot of unneeded stress on your engine. Once you get really comfortable with your stick, then try it.
FlyRiceRACEro2,it depends on how your car will launch properly and quickly
3000rpm is too low for staging it may chirp your tires but it will surely bog down,
doing a launch at 4500-5000rpm depending on the tires will do it

Pinoy3LeR, i guess it could work. You would have to drop the amount of pressure in your tires majorly. That way you could keep that grip.
Correct, Honda Vtec engines produce their high/peak torque/hp at high RPMs, thats why its necessary to shift at around 6000rmp and up... unlike 5.0s, one can shift as early as 3000, peak torque at low rpm.
Yup, learn to drive stick first, know u're power band, know where u get the most torque, you'll want to
shift just after your peek torque so that when you're in the next gear, your RPMS will be where u'll have
the most power.

the reason why we should shift near redline...
the cars peak hp is around 5500-6000 rpms. If you shift at that point, when the rpms drop, lets say to 4500rpms, you're only making 85hp (according to LX dyno). If you shift at 6800, which is producing over 90 hp to the wheels, when it drops, you are still in your peak powerband. shifting at the peak will hurt you, you'll lose too much after the shift. We own hondas only for this reason, the peak power band is at top, that is the only reason why they produce decent numbers/times for the amound of hp they have.
