How long will it last???

Since this is my first Honda purchase, how many miles can I expect to drive my 7th gen Civic without requiring any major unscheduled repairs (i.e., engine and transmission rebuild, replace A/C compressor, etc.) Can anyone speak from previous experience?

As long as you do all the scheduled maintenance on the vehicle, you should be allright. But there is no guarantee that you won't have any unforseen problems w/ the car once your warranty runs out. Once a vehicle accumulates a certain amount of miles on it, certain parts on a vehicle tend to go out. Like pumps, hoses, alternators, that kind of stuff. But having to worry about your engine being overhauled or your transmission going out, I wouldnt worry to much about that unless you really abuse your car.

I'd say about 80k w/o anything breaking whatsoever.

The talk about after the warranty runs out is just a bunch of B.S..

You may get an oddball problem but more than likely my best guess is that you'll have 1-2 problems over 100k. That's from my experience with me and my wife's 6 hondas and my sister's 3 civics.

Well I am a Mechanical Engineer and some manufactures design components to last the length of the warranty. Lucky for us Hondas are designed well and I have heard of many hondas with over 250000km on them and the only thing that had to be repalced was the alternator and the starter, but obviously it is all relative to how you treat your car.

That's pretty much the "norm" with the exception of replacing the cv-joints.

That generation of accords is still my favorite. I still miss my '93 accord coupe and I sold her over 3 yrs ago.

If you read Vehicle Issues/Problems, you'll know that automatic transaxles in the 7thgen Civic often die before their first schedueled fluid change (50k mi.). Also, quite frequently before or just after warranty expires (36k mi.).

hm, does this mean I have to drive it like it's stolen to make sure it breaks before I hit 36k miles? lol

Um, you auto's should really read the TSBs before "nuking" your transaxles. Just a FYI.

Perhaps in the past components had a low MTBF(mean-time-between-failure), especially for brakes and exhaust systems, however because quality has been a major concern in the last 12+ years, manufacturers have gone away from low MTBF's. As a mechanical engineer you should then understand no manufacturer wants failures, and if they occur, it is simply from miscalculation(poor design) or poor manufacturing processes or both- basically unforseen failure modes or because the cost of incresing the MTBF outweighs the cost of replacing the components over the products life (for instance the cost of developing a lifetime transmission lubricant far exceeds the cost of having everyone change their fluid every 50k).

I would suggest that if you work for a company that designs components to fail, you may want to seek out a new employer.

So if you work for a company that makes light bulbs or bar soap you better find a new job..lol

Generally, I don't think there is any kind of real problem with the auto trans in the 7th gens. A lot of members on this site are teenagers and they drive there cars like typical teenagers do. Someone says there tranny, engine, etc., and people automatically assume that it's the cars fault. You have to remember who is driving the car and how they are most likely driving it.

Also, knowing that most of the members here are very young and tend to be male, I think it's safe to assume that a lot of these civics are driven quite hard. Honda autos are known for being loud when you shift into gears and sometimes shifting abruptly but not for premature failure.
