Getting another civic?
Hey, my son has had his license for about a year now. I'm planing to buy him a car around May of 2003, he's currently driving around a 2001 Civic LX. I'm thinking about getting him another Civic coupe with a stick shift. I want him to get a stick because if he learns to drive stick, he'll be able to drive every car out there. Here's my problem, should I go with a 2002 or 2003, and LX or EX? Can someone give me some hints? Or perhaps some other kind of vehicles out there that is better suitable for my situation?
Well... there's nothing different between those year LXs except some exterior/interior changes. If he's deserving, get him a 2k3 EX. If money's an issue, I'd just go with the LX. There's not really much difference in how well they perform. EXs have a slight upperhand with modifications (and I don't mean engine mods, try certain suspension mods.)

Appericate the fast reponse, if memory serves me correctly, the SI is a hatchback? I don't think he's a big hatchback fan. However, I think I'll look into the SI, what are some improvments from the EX to SI?
i wish I had an SI i love the looks.... it looks really roomy too. To each his own. As for me, im going to go drive my car :-d 2k2 Civic EX... Id rather have an SI than an RSX... I dont know why....

the 03 ex's come with alloys. not a big thing but at leats it will look a lot nicer stock, incase hes not the kid to mod his car (i saw them in nh for 17k asking)
Hey, and welcome to the site. The RSX you mentioned sounds like a good idea to me. The price will be slightly below 20k for the base model, but not by much, and thats getting a decent deal when condisering dealer invoice. The 03 civic ex would be my next pick, because for the difference in money between ex and lx trims, the ex offers more for not that much of a price increase. I like the extra options. Good idea w/ the stick, i wish i had gotten the civic in stick, i miss my accord 5 speed sometimes. As far as the Si is concerned, im sort of neutral, because they don't appeal to me, i'd rather shell out extra for the rsx.

If ABS braking is a concern, then consider getting him an EX. Its still kinda early to tell if the '03 Civics are better built then the '02. The'02 models seem not to be as prone to problems as the '01 since its the second year of the 7th gen.

2003 EX 5spd. (Si in Canada)
Maybe you should ask him if he wants an RSX (base model.... 160hp)
edit: I just read the above post.... Base Model RSX (www.carsdirect.com)

Since he's young and new to stick, get the EX. If you ask him, he'll be squirrely and say he wants it for the ABS (which is a very good reason and what I told my parents) but the reason he'll tell you he wants it is because of the sunroof and std cd player. For as little of a difference as there is in price, just go for the EX and get yourself ABS and some other goodies.

The one thing I found BS about the Ex model is that you have to pay extra for A/C! I believe the other trim levels it was standard.
if its his first car, AND hes learning to drive stick for the first time, get him a USED CAR. who not get a 6th gen 1999 or 2000 EX. youll save 5-8K on the initial purchase, will be able to get a low mile high quality example, and wont cry when the synchros come back gound out smooth. On top of that, IF he wants later on hell have a butt load of aftermarket to back it up.

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree w/ Hondaguru on this one. Get a good used 99/00 EX/Si manual for him. Your going to save some money, and still have a good, reliable car from Honda. Even if aftermarket parts arent what your looking for, (I know your not if this is for your son) a good used Honda would still be a good choice as far as reliability goes.
But, you could also look at any used 2001 RSX's with the 5 speed. Personaly, I think the Acura looks alot better than the civic, and I think most kids between the ages of 17-20 do also.

i looked at one for 14000... had about 30k on it, i thought the price was too much. the guy didnt take car of it at all, it had dings all over it plus the honda grill was missing
i got my 2002 lx sedan for 2000 dollars cheaper what the guy with Si was asking for.

I would stick with the civic EX. The RSX will have more HP but you will pay more in insurance for it to. But I also agree with Hondaguru that you should look into getting a used honda if he is learning to drive stick.
