insulating the hood
I was wondering if you insulate the hood to dampen engine noise will that cause the engine to run hotter or will it keep it cooler. It would help block the heat from the sun, but would it hold in the heat from the engine it self. The hood on a car can some times act like a heat sink on a computer it absorbs the heat and dissipates it with the out side air. maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about...can anyone shine a light on this?

It's not gonna make a significant difference either way as far as heat is concerned.
It will cut down on engine noise though.

It's a good way to cut engine AND road noise. No it's not going to catch fire if you use a proper piece of insulation. I'm going to the junk yard this weekend to find a nice under hood pad.
I'm going to try and find one that doesn't say Oldsmobile or something like that! Go for it!!! There is a thread on the rec.autos.makers.honda group about this right now...

I was considering putting some of the Peal & Seal stuff on there to act as insulation. The heat shouldn't be a problem, since it's made for high temperatures. It's roofing material you know! I just wonder if it'd be worth the trouble and how much noise it'd cancel out.

peal and seal would last about 3 minutes before it gets soft and peals off then seals your intake shut .
B-Quiet.com has a relatively cost effective hoodliner...dynamat has one as well but costs too much..cascade has one at a price sompleace in the middle..all 3 are virtually 100% identical...they work good in suppressing engine noise...and will not harm your engine

Hrm...You could be right about it coming off. I'm not brave enough to test it, so I checked out that B-Quiet site. Here's the Linkage for their headliner. $49 ain't too bad and it looks like quality stuff.
