Proposed Ont. legislation cracks down on street racing
By Canadian Press Dec 13, 2002
By Andrea Baillie
TORONTO (CP) -- Street racers in Ontario would be slapped with tougher penalties under legislation proposed Dec. 12, 2002 by the provincial government.
"Drivers caught street racing would be subject to immediate vehicle impoundment and the suspension of their driver's licence -- both for 48 hours," Transportation Minister Norm Sterling said as he introduced the bill Dec. 12 in the legislature.
"This would be in addition to any other charges laid by police in relation to a street race, such as existing offences for street racing, speeding or careless driving."
The legislation would also ban substances like nitrous oxide that are used to boost engine performance.
In addition, Sterling said, the bill would regulate window tinting to help protect police.
"This would make it safer for police to approach vehicles with tinted glass," he said, adding it would also allow drivers and pedestrians to better establish eye contact.
The legislation would also double fines for speeding in construction zones and make booster seats mandatory for young children.
If passed, Sterling said, Ontario would become the first province to make booster seats mandatory.
The seats would be required for children travelling in a parent or guardian's vehicle who weigh between 18 and 27 kilograms and whose seated height is less than 63 centimetres.
In recent years, street racing has become a growing summer problem in Canada.
Racers usually look for lonely, deserted stretches of highways and industrial areas that turn into ghost towns at night.
The purpose of the races is often to show off and compare cars, some of which have been modified to reach speeds in excess of 200 kilometres per hour.
At least 18 people have died from crashes related to street racing in the Toronto area in the past four years.
"The message we want to send is that street racing puts lives at risk and won't be tolerated," Sterling said.

In the US nitrous is already illegal TO USE. I don't think they'll ever ban it completely because if they did they'd have to ban propane and methan injection too on bigger trucks. The trick is having it and not having the bottle open on the streets, then its nice and legal....

I'd rather have to live with driving slow and not racing than watch where I pump gas or watch for
suicide Ql-Queda jetliners.
oh and btw, "eh" is better than americans saying "huh?"
Canadians: "Nice day eh?"
Americans: "Nice day huh?"

I was not aware that Nitrous was illegal in all states, but as far as I know there are no real laws about it up here in Canada that I am aware of. But I think they are now going to crack down on it. I can see ups and downs to it. The upside is that there will be less kids out there playing with the stuff and hurting themselves and others, no offense to anyone here. The downside would be that people that know how to use it reasonably will have a harder time doing so.
BTW if you guys want to make fun of us Canadians, it "Eh", not "Huh", he he .. Just kidding.

I think our Smog laws are a bit more relaxed than the US ones, but that will no doubt change with all this Koyoto (sp?) thing. I have never seen or heard of any traffic stops around me that anyone has had to pop their hoods or trunks for things like Nitrous, the only time they do that is for drugs, weapons, ect ..... . But your right we will just have to get more creative when we install them so no one find them.
BTW Grey I did see the movie, and thought it was funny as hell, we can take a joke about ourselves, because 99% of the time its true, like how they make fun of us when we say "house". Its all good .....

As for the "sport" you are refering to, its Currling. Its actually not all that bad, it is a strange sport if you dont understand it, but once you get into it, its not all that bad, kind of like golf I guess, to watch its boring but once you understand it and tried it, you like it.
Just my $0.02, I could be crazy though ........

Hey the good thing for me is that if they wanted to pull all that unsafe transport of blah, blah, blah. I just pull out my dangerous goods card and show it to them. I still have it from when I used to drive truck, so according to that I *Can* carry it. He he ......
alright, lets not be bad mouthing Canadians and the way we talk, cuz if you pple knew anything, we all DON'T talk like that. Everytime I went to Buffalo or even Detroit on a hockey tournament, all you americans would say is "YA'LL HERE ON A HACKEY TOURNAMENT?" Now thats horrible english if you ask me. But I also know that not every single American talks like that. I'm not stereotyping all Americans here, but if I had to compare who's english is better, accents and all, I would have to stick to Canadians.

And, in Alberta, we have no restrictions on using nitrous oxide in our cars.
Edit: I guess you're opposed to us de-criminalizing weed but really, what harm will it do? Canada had the largest percentage of youths in the world who have tried weed even when it wasn't de-criminalized. It didn't stop them before but now maybe with the extra money saved in policing and jailing people over possession of it, the government can establish an effective anti-drug program. We also had a committee appointed to do research about the effects of it and they found out that people are more likely to become alcoholics than chronics. And, it's not as harmful to ourselves like smoking and drinking are.

That's cause you're out in the stix!! Around toronto...Cops routinely stop at meets and hang outs...Checking out the cars...handing out tickets for illegal mods, etc etc. Especially if you go to shows like Darkknights. They'll sit outside the grounds and randomly pull people over, and inspect their trunk, under the hood, etc etc. They're getting ridiculous!
