SHEESH!! I see that so much every morning, it makes we wanna go POSTAL! I feel sorry for the poor guy/girl in the little car that they plow into because they were putting on mascara.
I admit that everyone has the right to buy what they want, but c'mon, get something reasonable people. I thought the minivan craze was bad. It's nothing compared to the SUV fad.
SELFISH Perspective #1:
It is this attitude that "I can do whatever I want and buy a huge vehicle to protect myself," regardless of what it may do to other people if involved in an accident.
SELFISH Perspective #2:
Has he also considered the large amount of fossil fuel that this vehicle consumes? So what about the future when we have a dire need for these resources and they are unavaible just because "SHE" wanted to have "HER OWN" SUV.
If only we could begin to change these people's thought process that govern their SELFISH and ignorant decisions.

Isn't it amazing... This is the amount of ignorance and selfishness that could only be experienced in America today. Dm1prep's argument only exemplifies it.
first of all, If i was an American I would have killed myself by now, but thats another story ......
It is this attitude that "I can do whatever I want and buy a huge vehicle to protect myself," regardless of what it may do to other people if involved in an accident.
If people follow the laws of the road, we won't have thast problem, but after being involved in a near death accident, i fhting she has the right to purchase a vehicle that makes her feel safe.......but thats MY OPINION

To answer this statement, she does have a smaller vehicle that she drives around town, and only uses the large vehicle on major hiways and when taking long trips....as her accident occured on the 401 - a major 4 lane hiway here in Ontario
Again, I have my own views and opionons and until you start paying the bills on the vehicle, I think we'll continue driving it...

And YOU are the retard for supporting such a pathetic argument and letting her buy such a monstrosity of a vehicle. Tell me, how are YOU going to feel when you're riding with her one day, she hits a civic because that monster truck couldn't slow down fast enough, kills the guy/girl in the car and neither of you have a scratch on you?? You're gonna thank God you're not hurt, right? What about that guy/girl's family? I guess it was just too bad they had a little car.
You're obviously supporting her so blindly that you can't see it from the other drivers perspective. Let her drive that big behemoth vehicle and pay ridiculous fuel costs. She'll feel safe and sound, while being one of biggest annoyances on the road. You don't get it. You can have a serious, if not fatal, accident in ANY vehicle.

Gee...sarcasm and a compliment in the same flame post. That's a first.
My only argument is that many people associate size with safety. You can get a 5-star crash rating car and be safe, but people don't do that. Instead of getting a safe Taurus or Accord, they get large truck-based SUVs. They don't understand that they're really not any safer, but make themselves more dangerous to others. Not to mention the fuel and maintenance costs of owning a large vehicle. It sounds like she's happy with her truck. I just hope my example of the worst possible accident never happens to her.

believe me, we went throught the safety aspects of every vehicle - the fact the trailbalzer has side impact airbags, on star, and is a large vehicle made her want to purchase it - plus the fact we have a dog and you can't fit a large black lab into an accord or taurus very well.....and i didn't see your example of a worst possible accident ...must have missed that one ....

- Sorry I'm just still curious to hear, she bought a SUV for the "safety features" right? A close family friend was a Toyota Land Cruiser... got hit by a little car (a Civic actually I think)... her big bad SUV flipped over... she wasn't injured too badly but she could have if the speeds had been higher. I can't stand people who think that "bigger is safer." It isn't necessarily. Another thing that pisses me off is people (particularly girls...) who buy big trucks (or SUVs) just to have one. Many people, both guys and girls, I know own F-150s and Silverados. They put a tonneau (sp?) cover over the bed, and NEVER put anything in there. The whole purpose of owning a truck is to a)Haul stuff in the bed b)Tow stuff c)Possibly have to go off road. I'm sorry, if you never need to do any of those things, then you need to turn your truck in and buy a CAR. There is NO point (trucks and SUVs are NOT safer then many cars) to owning a truck if you don't use them for the aforementioned things!
Sorry got off on a bit of a tangent there... it isn't the governments, or our job to say who can buy what kind of vehicle etc etc. Land of the free means we get to buy big gas guzzling vehicles right? I just think you're an idiot for buying a big expensive gas guzzling vehicle for NO GOOD REASON

1. The vehicle has Onstar, front and side airbags and a crash bar on the front for SAFETY reasons
2. The vehicle is big enought that it holds a full grown black lab (thats a dog, just to clarify)
3. The vehicle has a built in DVD player which we use when we go on long trips (which is at least once a
month for family reasons)
4. It seats 8 and she uses it to tote clients around as she works in Real Estate (thats selling houses just to clarify)
5. The vehicle has 4 wheel drive which is used in the winter as we live in Ontario and winters can be long and the snow can fall forever
6. We like the vehicle and since she could afford it she bought it........FOR THE REASONS STATED ABOVE
I don't think this makes me or my girlfriend an idiot .......you on the other hand.....

OOh ooh...or a 2wd Suburban!! All in the low 30 G's.
OOh ooh...or a 2wd Suburban!! All in the low 30 G's.
- Actually, I was framing my response mainly against truck owners, but since you decided to call me illiterate:
1. You say she bought it for those safety features, blah blah blah. Thats fine. I just said that even with those really super cool safety features, it doesn't make it close to being one of the safest cars on the road, far from it. Granted, it might be safer than some other SUVs, but that doesn't make it near being the safest car in America.
2. We used to have a full grown Shetland Sheep Dog (a canine) and it fit fine in the back of a Ford Taurus, with plenty of extra room. We could even fit two people in the back with her. Yes, I do know that a full grown lab is much bigger than a Sheltie, but unless its as big as a horse, you should be able to fit it in the back of a sedan just fine.
3. WTF? DVD player? what does that have to do with buying a SUV? Ohhhh cool you got to pay a big dealer markup for a factory installed DVD player which you could have bought for much cheaper aftermarket. I could put a DVD player in a Pinto for long family trips too.
4. Seats 8. I'll give you that one, not many cars can seat 8. So, when most people buy houses where you live they bring their 5 children along to look at houses? Or do they bring their full grown lab too?
5. Many cars have AWD. Here in sunny southern california it snows very little, but when we used to live in Colorado our 1984 Toyota Tercel with snow chains and snow tires got us along fine... never got stuck... of course, I'm sure when your wife is bringing her 7 clients and full grown lab along with her to look at houses, she does it right after a big snow and goes offroading in it right?
6. Yes you can afford it. Super. I didn't say that I, nor anybody could tell you what kind of vehicle to buy. You have it, you love it, good job. I just feel that your reasons for thinking that you "need" a SUV are illogical. (That means they aren't logical). If you had just said "I love feeling like I could crush all other cars on the road. If they sold tanks I would buy one, they are super safe, even from Iraqi shells. Money is no object." I would have more respect for you because you would be telling the truth, not using half-assed reasons. By the way, no need to explain those really really big words. After I sound them out, I can usually ask somebody what they mean. Usually one of the other kids riding the little yellow school bus with me.

Bumper Mentality A review of Keith Bradsher's High and Mighty: SUVs
I stole this link from the "other" suv thread. This is obviously written from the point of view of a car driver that is fed up with suvs. You'll find many of the points I was making, plus a couple that Ghettocivic mentioned above...especially the part about the dog fitting in the car.

Anyway, nowadays it seems like every topic becomes an argument, and people can't admit that they might be even a little worng, so this will be my last post in this thread...

Sorry for pointing out a flaw, but if you can have a near fatal accident in any car, then who cares if she has a larger vehicle? If it was an older male driver, would you feel differently? By the way, if she follows the rules, and another car hits her, A) she probably WILL get the safety SHE payed for, and B) it would be the other persons fault anyway, which would not be rooted in her own selfishness nor would it be grounded in her own ignorance, quite the contrary. I can say that if that's why she really bought the car, keeping those issues in mind, do you really see her being reckless? Doubtful...

Actually, here in Ontario, the EXT is the size of a Tahoe (not sure why I would want one of those)
And to "Ghettocivic" lol, we got about a $8000 discount for paying cash plus we know the owner and got a 2003 Chevy Camaro SS as well....

Thanks for the link Bellz
You may already know this, but for what you paid for that Trailblazer EXT, you could've gotten a full size 4wd Tahoe. Just an interesting fact.
Actually, here in Ontario, the EXT is the size of a Tahoe (not sure why I would want one of those)
And to "Ghettocivic" lol, we got about a $8000 discount for paying cash plus we know the owner and got a 2003 Chevy Camaro SS as well....
Good choice on the Camaro ... EDIT: Yeah I was busy looking for one of those many "owned" pics but I couldn't find one
Off topic: I thought Chevy stopped camaro production... I like them, but a few years back, i thought motor trend said they had bad sales and were stopping production...
p.s. don't flame just b/c i am listening to what a car mag says (it was on the show too), but i was asking because i know mags and TV are not as reliable as they should be...

Doubtful...
Anyway, nowadays it seems like every topic becomes an argument, and people can't admit that they might be even a little worng, so this will be my last post in this thread.
1. High center of gravity, which promotes rollover, especially at highway speeds.
2. Crappy brakes...how can you avoid accidents if you can't stop in time to keep from plowing some poor stupid guy that pulls out in front of you?
Let's quote a few points from the article, eh?
"Bradsher makes painfully clear that the belief in SUV safety is a delusion. The occupant death rate in SUVs is 6 percent higher than it is for cars--8 percent higher in the largest SUVs. SUV drivers tend to overestimate their own security, which prompts many to drive like maniacs, particularly in inclement weather. For every one life saved by driving an SUV, five others will be taken. Government researchers have found that a behemoth like the four-ton Chevy Tahoe kills 122 people for every 1 million models on the road; by comparison, the Honda Accord only kills 21.
Rather than hitting the reinforced doors of a car with its bumper, an SUV will slam into more vulnerable areas and strike a car driver in the head or chest, where injuries are more life-threatening. But before you get an SUV just for defensive purposes, think again. Any safety gains that might accrue are cancelled out by the high risk of rollover deaths, which usually don't involve other cars."
It's interesting to me that the article was actually WRITTEN by a girl...Stephanie Mencimer.
edit: Oh yeah...I forgot to mention the part where she says that most suv drivers feel so "safe" that they don't wear their seatbelts, worsening their chances of actually surviving an accident. How stupid is that? If you're inside ANYTHING going 55mph and slam to a stop, you're gonna get hurt if you're not wearing a belt. Period! That airbag isn't gonna keep you from flopping around the interior before the cars come to a rest. Plus the airbag doesn't stay inflated long. It's only there to keep you from banging against the steering wheel, not to hold you in the driving seat. You'd have to have a full body airbag all the way around you to be remotely safe w/o using a seatbelt.
Yeah they will not have any 2003 Camaros, 02 was the last year. Yeah I don't get why you would need a Trailblazer XLT I think the Trailblazer itself is big enough and waistes enough gas. My mom has a GMC 2003 Envoy and that thing just goes through the gas but it drives great. For safety reasons just because you have a big ride doesn't mean crap, I would buy a Lexus and feel just as safe as a person would in a SUV. I don't have to worry about roll overs and all the accidents I see every year related to big vehicle wrecks. Buy what you want but still you put way more people in danger with a big truck and burn more of natural resources every day.
I hate SUV's they are the most un economical vehicles on the market

yeah its a 02 camaro - last year they made them so we could not get a deal on it - and I pointed out the discount becuase somone had said we paid too much for the vehicle (referring that I could have got a tahoe instead) anyway, this is starting to get a bit pointless as I'm arguing with guys who drive civic's and believe the world revolves around a 4 cyclinder sedan...you have your opinion and I have mine - lets keep it at that ....

well, i wasn't trying to disrespect civic owners, hell i was one ...and I have nothing against people who drive one (obviously) - I just think some people have a narrow point of view when it comes to other vehicle because the drive an all mighty civic ....... (i'm sorry but I love pulling up to a civic, be it a 92 or 02 and smoke them with me car, not truck.....but car) although the guys I have met from this board have been the some of the nicest guys I've met .....
