Before I begin, I feel the need to state: "There is NO replacement for displacement."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you had a choice from the cars below, what would YOU pick? I just thought I'd take a little time to compile a list of cars that'd be great to mod.
1993-1998 Toyota Supra
1994-1999 Mitsubishi 3000GT
1990-1996 Nissan 300ZX
1993-1995 Mazda RX-7
The reason I didn't mention their trim level is because it'd probably be a good idea to purchase their base model to cut price (especially in long run). The base model of the mentioned cars all come standard with 3.0L V6, although you'd sacrifice all-wheel drive with a standard Mitsu 3000GT over VR-4 (although, once again, you'd save yourself a lot of money upfront and more in the long run). I'm expecting a lot of you will probably say Supra, lol.
Edit: Okay, I added 1993-95 Mazda RX-7 because I am getting a feeling the Supra would just get too much glorifying, lol.

I'd go with the Supra or the Z... Either one should be good for 5 or 600 HP, but there's probably more Supra goodies.

There is a replacement for displacement... it's called technology. Unfortunately, when you combine displacement with technology, you can't beat it....

i have no idea what hp and torque figures are for vr4, but if they are at all similar to stock figures of mkiv then the vr4 would get the win off the line. although, from a rolling start (i.e. highway) awd doesn't do much anymore plus the extra weight might come into play so i'd say the supra would win.
definitely pick the supra, upgrade to t88h, and it would beat almost everybody in the drag strip and could beat everybody on the highway, motorcycles/bikes be fu cked.
oh yeah, and if i could be picky i'd get the 97 or 98, i believe the uk version comes with bigger brakes in back and it isn't restricted to 280hp. any year tho it wouldn't matter because i'd put as much money as necessary to clean and strengthen the block as long as it was tt and 6-speed. althought i dunno if the vvt-i on the newer models really made a humongous improvement over the other ones w/out it?
edit: i just found this:

I found these values, don't know how accurate they are:
1994 Supra TT: 1/4 in 13.7 sec @ 104.6mph, 0-60 in 4.9 sec
1993 RX-7 TT: 1/4 in 13.7 sec @ 102.5mph, 0-60 in 5.0 sec
1994 Dodge Stealth R/T turbo: 1/4 in 13.9 sec @ 100mph, 0-60 in 5.2 sec(related to 3000GT)

I'm going to go ahead and be different and say the Nissan 300ZX. I LOVE the look of that car, and if you're planning on modding up the motor anyway it doesn't really matter if it's much slower in stock form.
FD is the 93-95 model designation, FC is the 87-91, etc.
I'd definitely go for the RX-7, IMO the most "pure" sports car of the bunch. I'd get it in either bright blue or british racing green
