I ask because it appears to me that most of us here only care about the 1/4th mile. Personally I dont give a rats *** what my 1/4 mile time would be, Drag racing imho, is a wast of time for our cars. If I wanted to go fast in a strait line I wouldn't have purchaced a civic. I do however race my car, SCCA SOLO II aka, autocross. I like it mostly because it gives the little guy a fighting chance to win. (some of the fastest cars on the track are 4th gen civics). the other thing I like about it is that its cheep! you can race with a bone stock car and still be competitve, thanks to the classing system. I run STS (Street Touring with street tires). anny way Im rambling now. So Who really races their car?
i autocross raced with mr car last december....it was fun as hell. i recommend it to anyone. drag racing is a serious waste of time with our cars.
I always race my car..and win... it's not fair though..without a driver my car can't move so I can walk and beat in a race...
well if you put it on a hill, it may beat you in the 1/4 mile.
1/4 mile drag racing is not a waste in our cars if you go to the track knowing that you will not "win" the races, but you can work on your times and technique. It is a waste if you think you will be fast. I have learned alot from the 3 times I have gone to the local track, and it is stuff I can apply to whatever car I decide to get next (when I take that one to the track). Sure I had to same thoughts on drag racing as you do now, but I went out and tried it for myself. I realized it is not as easy as it seems. Its very hard to be consistant (NOT FAST). You might want to rethink your statement. As for as autocrossing goes, I'm sure sometime before the end of the year I am going to attend some of the local SCCA events. The last time I was at the 1/4 track I meet a man who has been attending the autocrossing meets recently, and I learned an awful lot about them.
i like to race in trafic its the best it keeps you hyped no str8 lines for me
I went to an autocross event a couple weekends ago. I have never had so much fun in my car, and have it all legal at the same time. We actually had a cop drive into our lot to see how fast people were going through the course. The track i usually hit up is designed for acceleration, because the guy who puts it together drives a 90 vette, and he is damn good too. The vette was making it through the track in 45 seconds, while i made it in 56, im sure i could have knocked off a few seconds if i had more suspension mods, all i have is Pro kit springs, which is better then stock though. I run in STX class class because i have non street tires.(Khumo)*spelling.
I drive an economic coupe with less horsepower than over half the vehicles on the market...
and I'm riding on tires that are meant to last... but not meant to grip any road...
so yeah...
no, dont have the skills or the money to.
edit: and yeah, despite its drawbacks... when i see a 11.0 whatever car... I'm impressed.... when I see him do the same time 5 times in a night... I'm impressed. consistency is another thing people dont think about as much.

I can see how 1/4 mile can be chalenging, maybe even fun. But I prefer to drive my car. Autocross is 90% driver 5%car and 5% *****. Drag racing, is more car then driver, altho I admit that that driver needs skills to really compete. Also with autcross, you dont need anny thing special done to your car. example, The First time I went out a Bone Stock Accord was puting down better times than Me. And the last race, Put on by the local Porche Owners Club, I was out running some porches and Corvettes. You dont see that at a drag meet unless the Civic is highly modifyed. All my car has is Spirngs, Header, Intake and exaust. I think the point im trying to make is that speed costs money, you can turn anny car in to a speed freak if you have enough $$$$. just look at the K20 Swaps. For the poor guy like my self, I want to compete where I have a resonable chance to win with what I have, A Humble Civic.
Race where you want to race, Strip or track.

Far as drag racing goes
. Did a little few years back on motorcycles and that was kinda fun but racing little rice cars
. Yes I can see how timing your launch in bracket racing and beating you opponent by meer fractions of seconds can be fun......for awhile. To drive fast and do well in an autocross atmosphere take a great deal of skill and timing. So do whatever makes you happy but please keep in touch with reality.
Just haul **** every there and there
I race my car SCCA Solo2. I run STS as well. Last week I got some track time on a 1.8 mile track. Got about an hour sat and and hour sunday it was fun. Got up to 90mph on the straight and 70mph through the first turn. I put AEM pads on the friday before and wore them completely out by sunday. Here is a link to our site. You can see my civic in some of the pics. Silver #5. http://www.okscca.org/ under solo2 then Pictures.
I was also deeply involved in STS class this past spring/summer, I ran in 7 events and was fairly competitive as far as sts is concerned. I love the autocross, mostly because it is alot more fun to make our car outhandle anything from the showroom than it is to fight with acceleration times. Plus, its just so much fun strapping a helmet to your head and seeing how well your car actually handles, and how small adjustments to your setip can change the handling.
For thouse who don't know. Autocross/Solo II events are low to medium speed auto racing events; they are often run on parking lots and airport runways. Generally a course will be defined using traffic cones. One driver at a time negotiates a course laid out with the cones, or pylons, testing their skill against the clock. If your interested look up your local SCCA Chapter (Sports Car Club of America)Scca home page look for Solo II events. the Las Vegas SCCA puts on an auto cross about every other weekend, ushually on a sunday. I highly recomend this to all drivers, there is no better place to find the limits of you and cars abilities. Be warned however, once you start Autocrossing you may not be able to stop.LVR SCCA
I just raced, like 2 hours ago, with my roommate and his rsx. It's not a type s, but damn, that 160 h is so much faster than my EX.
Ran SCCA AutoX a few weeks ago. Wound up in STS because of the intake (I was stupid and didn't think about it... If I took it off, I coulda run stock
). Oh well, It just took 1 time, I'm hooked on it, and I'll be doing it next season
). Oh well, It just took 1 time, I'm hooked on it, and I'll be doing it next season I race my car for fun at the local track. 1/4 mile. Its fun, but nothing tooooo serious. 15$ a day, 95$ membership fee. Its worth it!
I want ot know what tires BlueRevs has on his Civic. Kuhmo 712's and I think even the VictoRacers are allowed in STS. I AutoX too!! 2001 and 2002 HS champ. I also just moved into STS. Hopefully I'll be competitive next year when I get rims and TIRES.

as far as tires, Im looking to get Falken AZEINS Sport. Every one at the track has loved them and they are not that expensive.
the only question that remains is can I fit 225/45ZR17 (only $114) on my car with out rubbing? If I cant then I'll go for the 215/45ZR16 ($105).

Why race and ruin the car when you can spend the $5k or so on modifications ($2000 wheels, $1000 I/H/E, $1500 Coilovers and $500 F/B Strut & Sways) on a moderate condition 95 240SX. It's got RWD and way more potential than our economy boxes. Although the 240 will not get 36 mpg.
Keep in mind, I'm not hating on people who do race. Just to let you know where I'm coming from, I am broke, hungry and trying to get a University education so racing is the last thing on my mind. I like 240SX's and I like how efficient my EX's mileage is. So having a $5k 240 just for racing is ideal because I wouldn't be paying insurance on it because I would only drive it for races and I can preserve my EX as it carts me around for 50 miles a day.
Why purchace another car just to race? Well I'd like to but I cant afford it so I race what I have. And as far as ruin my civic, well AutoX is just not going to do that, unless you really screw up. You will put on a little extra wear-n-Tear on it, mostly youll just go through Breaks, tires and Oil more often then the next guy. As far as potential, shure the 240 has more potential, more horsepower, more over all support by the aftermarked mfg and rear wheel drive can be a great advantage in the corners. But In autox potential of the car means very little. the Driver is all that really matters. On a road course, the car can make a big difference, Higher speeds, wider turns, thats where a larger, faster car can really make a difference. on an autocross course, handling is King. Thats why the 3 4th gen civics were in the top 5 at the SCCA National Finals (STS class). STS class includes and I quote
" Vehicles for this category include all coupes/sedans with a minimum of four seats, four seat belts; that are not sports car based, with a maximum engine displacement of 3.1 liters, normally aspirated and certain small displacement turbocharged sedans. No limited slip differentials are permitted except for factory standard viscous coupler type units. "
so as you can see that STS covers a wide veriaty of Makes and models. So why is the civic doing so well? becaus they can Turn.
Any way im rambling again.
