ASE cerification does help you depending on what field you're certified in, but first of all are you asking how well a job as a mechanic is. I was a ASE certified mechanic for 10 years with 4 years with my own shop, it can be rewarding cash wise and very nerve wracking at times. Depending on how well you grasp the field depends on you, if you've never worked as a mechanic and you're young (16-19) find a job as a mechanics helper at a local shop. You'll basically be a lot boy for a while, parking cars, cleaning the garage, getting lunch etc. If you show good work ethics you'll start changing oil, rotating tires and helping in other aspects of more complicated jobs.
Or you could go to a Tech School and learn or do both like I did, I went to school from 7 to 2 then worked at the shop from 3 to 7 every weekday.
I was ASE certified in A/C, Brakes, Front Ends/Alginments, by being certified doesn't mean that you're a great mechanic because I've seen a lot of hacks that were ceritfied. But it shows the customer and employer that you are making an effort to further expand in you field.
I live in Florida and basically everyone that worked at a good shop was at least certified in A/C, that was our cash cow in the summer.
I got out of the field a few years ago because of cost of insurance for my shop, and I couldn't stand working for anyone else. I still have all my tools and enjoy doing the work myself on my own car because I know it will be done right, plus you'll save your family a ton of money in maintance.
