I've always known VTEC-E to be a form of VTEC tuned for gas mileage rather than performance, used in the HX and Hybrid. The regular VTEC is used in the EX.... not that it really matters though, because HP at the wheels is so close anyways between all trims. I'm getting an EX because they include a buttload of extras(like a sunroof )

He's actually right. The brochure DOES in fact say the EX has VTEC-E but that seems kinda akward for an EX Civic which is the trim that's focused slightly more on performance than gas mileage. That may be what the brochure says but it could be a mis-print.

Actually anyone here who knows about the different kinds of VTECs in Honda engines should be able to clarify that. I don't hear much talk about the HX thought.

I know that VTEC-E is the economy VTEC. I believe that under 3500 RPM (or so) that only one intake valve opens fully and the second intake valve opens just a crack (to keep fuel from puddling in the valve) which creates a nice swirl in the combustion chamber therefore making a easier and more efficient mixture to burn.

Then above whatever the switchover point is (its around 3500 RPM or so) both intake valves open fully. I am not sure if there is another switchover on the VTEC-E for the higher lift cam lobes, or even if the VTEC-E has a higher lift cam lobe.

I noticed for the 2003 Civic Coupe EX the gas mileage ratings now match the HX for the 5spd. This must be a misprint, but if it isnt...More power to Honda.

I believe the EX has a regular SOHC VTEC engine. VTEC-E is only on the HX and I think the engine *says* VTEC-E on it.......... I could be wrong.

Now I'll just have to find that article I've read outlining differences between SOHC VTEC, DOHC VTEC, i-VTEC, VTEC-E...

But from what I remember, only the iVTEC and maybe the DOHC has real VTEC over the entire powerband. All other VTEC engines only over 3.5k.

HX = SOHC VTEC - E

EX = SOHC VTEC

LX, DX = SOHC NON VTEC

Kick *** they now list the "aero" lip-kit as an option!

As soon as the page fully works for building cars (final page is down that shows price) I am gonna go in and see how much a Pearl Blue DX is with a OEM wing and lipkit.

WTF one thing I don't understand, since when do car manufactures not include air-conditioning? I have to select A/C as an option when building a DX, man is that dumb

A/C's always been with group packages even though no one buys the car without one. Like DX-G, LX-G, EX I think has it by default.

It's their way of lowering the "base" price of the vehicle on paper.

Yea that sucks, base price on a DX 5-Speed is $12,800, so you think: "wow awesome".

But after A/C its like $13,900-$14,000. I was like "Awww....man!"

misprint, I have the 2001 and 2002 brochures.....

2001 EX = VTEC-E
2002 EX = VTEC
2003 EX = VTEC-E again

I'm not gonna say I know for sure because maybe the some how did change it, but hell, it's pretty doubtful that they'd go E, then no E, then E again! IMHO, just some more Honda name games folks

Oh, about the whole VTEC/VTEC-E thing.... I've realized, that makes no difference. The true difference is whether it's in the Lean Burn version or not.

HX and the Hybrid are LeanBurn VTEC's
EX is regular VTEC

Uh, I am assuming the OEM lip-kit they are offering is the same thing that was placed on some 02 EX models as part of an "Performance Package".
