Awesome Gas Mileage!!!!!

In a previous post, I had reported getting 36.5 mpg in mixed city/highway driving (LX with 5 sp.) Well, I just got 40.5 mpg in a 325 mile round trip (all highway) from North Jersey to Atlantic City. WW!!!!!!

Wow, we pretty much just took the same trip. I went from CT to Cape May to northern Jersey...roughly 48mpg. I love having an HX.

Do you get better mileage from using 94-octane gas?

damnit i think i'm only gettin 200 miles a tank on my auto. i know its mainly city driving and i have 18s but 200 seems kinda too low. i use 87 octane and dont even rev it that high, nothing over 3.5k rpms. this was my first time checking it so i'll see after i fill up again, hopefully my 200miles a tank is wrong

No. Our cars are actually tuned for 86 octane.

Try pouring in a bottle of Chevron Techron next time you fill up. Your mileage will be shit for that tank, but after than you should notice a significant improvement, especially if you've never used it before.

Using higher octane gas will only increase the amount of $ exiting your wallet. It won't increase your MPG

heres a lil lesson in GAS and OCTANE...
(1) just cause it costs more, does not mean it will make ur car run better or longer in MPG.
(2) the higher the octane, the hotter it burns in the engine, meaning it burns FASTER!
(3) like someone else said, our cars are specifically designed/tuned to run on 86-87 octane fuel. anything else is pretty much wasting money.
(4) higher octane gas usually is refined and cleaner, however if you use it, u might notice SMALL engine performance gains, but not significant enough to make it worth it...

this lesson is over...

yeah i use to use cheap arco gas in the city, got 25mpg. switched to cheveron w/ techron...major improvements 28 mpg. i got a ex auto too. lesson: use name brand gas (i.e.: cheveron, 76, mobil, shell) instead of generic gas (i.e.: arco, costco, etc). costs a few cents more per gallon, but i got 40 mi more to the tank.

the best ive ever gotten was 330 plus change miles on a tank of gas...mostly highway driving from NJ to MA. not all highway driving tho cause i drive from place to place in MA, but still...i have never gotten better than 330. but im pretty sure its because i drive it pretty hard. take it to 5k revs when getting out of tolls and such. that has a lot to do with it i think. plus i average maybe 85-90mph on the trip. maybe i should go slower...haha. naaaaaaaaaah.

bottle? isn't that gasoline? cause i use that every once in awhile.. maybe its cause i had 1/3 of a tank left of that and i filled it up with 76 gas with the rest? i doubt that would cause it to burn that fast tho

who read the velocity mag with july/aug issue? i read one article (tech ref) about the octane value. in extreme weathers such as hot summer or cold winter, where you drive with your AC on, the techie suggests higher octane. i cannot remember the details but if i can read it again, i will post the whole article.

You can also get Techron (just the additive) at many auto stores. Chevron gas stations already have it in the fuel, but here in CT where there are no Chevron stations, I have to buy the additive seperately.

That's probably to prevent predetonation caused by higher temperatures.

I've gotten up to 42 mpg and never less than 30 mpg. I do mostly city driving with AC sometimes and I average 34 mpg. I used to fill up with Mobil regular (86 or 87 or whatever it is). Now I use only Texaco (no Chevrons around here). I think brand name gas does make a difference though I can't prove it. I never try higher octanes. Maybe I will do it once out of scientific curiousity........

Geez, what are you guys doing? I get no less than 350 miles to a tank. I've been able to pull over 400 a couple times, and I have an auto LX 4-Door. Here's a tip - spend the $2 or $3 on a bottle of fuel injector cleaner. It might not improve it that tank, but you'll notice an improvement in the next one for sure. I use a bottle of that every 3 or 4 tanks of gas and it works like a charm.

Oh, and I usually get the mid-range 88 Octane gas, just cause I like that little extra pep.

except that there is no extra pep since you won't be getting the benefit from the higher octane...

I use strictly 89 Octane (87 is usually lower quality, it ticks and pings) and use a bottle of STP fuel injector cleaner ever time I buy full synthetic oil.
I get about 400 miles per tank with about 2/3 hiway miles with my LX Auto.

I used to get about 34 mpg mostly city driving, but since gas prices are skyrocketing, I've been driving more carefully and have push up to 38mpg city driving, seriously... I used 91 octane, 'cause that's the lowest octane grade we get here

higher octane burns slower
generally is not refined better/cleaner very few companies do that if any do anymore, its cheaper for them to use additives to gain octane/cleaning detergents

higher octane in a stock civic, except the new 06 si will cause a small drop in power/mpg about .5-1% roughly

just like race gas, cam2 methanol ect. less potential energy and slower burn than straight gasoline, so you can run high compression, leaner mixture, agressive cams blah blah ect. ect.

Yeah, that's what I was about to say to... The higher the octane, the slower it burns, so if your engine is tuned for 87.. then putting in the higher octane is only leaving unburned fuel in the chambers. That's not a good idea. Do yourself a favor and use what Honda recommends.

You want better mileage? Start using lubecontrol products. Last time I checked, my moderately modded auto gets 26 city 42 highway but i'm sure that will go up some more. I'm using 89 octane for now.
