how often do you redline (give 'er!) ???
Heya,
So I'ze jes wondering how hard do you guys usually drive your civic? Do you redline at every chance you get? Once a day? Once a week? Or do you just drive mildly hard? Peel out often? I just want to see how hard other people drive. I do like to push it, but I need to restrain meeself, or my civic wont last long! I maybe redline every other day, but I'm cutting back now. I like to save it for 'special days'.

I rarely drive my Civic anymore...just mostly to and from work (where I get into another car)....I think the fastest I've ever gone in the Civic is about 80 and that's hardly redlining it...
How I drive the patrol car is a different story

... Honestly, on the way to work, there is this sweet S turn in an industrial complex. No one around, all the traffic going one way. I have experienced understeer, I have spun out the tires in second, realized why I need a Quaife differential, and pushed the Kumhos to the limit. And twice I shifted to late in the turn and redlined to the point, the cut off engaged.
Is it fun, heck yeah! Does it waste gas, yep, I can tell when I am playing around and when I am cruising. I lose almost 40 miles on a tank by speeding around.
Burning out wastes my tires and clutch, so I rarely ever do that. But our cars are meant to rev pretty high. My truck redlines at 5000 rpm, so the near 7 for the Civic was a huge change.

I usually redline in 2nd coming off of a red light when I need to pass someone. In the city its hard to redline in 3rd as I run out of road...
Redlining is fine, just don't go into the red zone. Shift around 6700 rpm...
Use common sense. No need to redline if theres are yellow/red light just down the street. Watch out for speed traps, and cops.
Honda engines are amazing and are designed for hign rpms, unlike domestic engines which are designed for low-end torgue and low-mid rpms.
As for your engine not lasting long, it will last longer than your car body, so don't worry about pushing it.
And don't forget to change your engine oil!!!!!
Other than that dude, you have an awesome car...

24/7/365 in 1, 2, and 3 if there is room, and I have gotten there in 4 before as well.
I make it a practice to buy slow cars, because I have a nasty tendancy to use all of the power available to me at all times.
Never. Approaching 6k RPM at 2nd gear's pretty satisfying and I do it a couple times a week, but that's it. Quite frankly I don't see any more torque coming out pushing it farther. I think the highest I've gone was 6500 RPM. I use the high RPM range for passing, not for racing, so I never see the need to approach the redline (it doesn't take that long to pass cars so...).

If I had a tach, I'd let ya know lol
- I like to take it up pretty high, but since Honda's rev high as mentioned above, I can't really tell...haven't reached the cutoff point though, if that's any gauge...

Everyday...the redline is just a suggested shift point, nothing more. You can actually safely go past the redline and the fuel cut-off won't kick in until around 7800-8000 rpm.

Edit: Oh, and b4 anyone flames...I am not a street racer but I do take it occassionally to SOLO 2 events and generally drive my cars hard every single day. Needless to say, I'vegotten my money's worth out of my 'vic.

I just wanted to add that I actually dont redline, but goto maybe 6k rpm. Its just so fun to feel the power above 4k rpms. Well, I'll probably keep myself in check and just use the power here and there. (yes, and keep changing that oil!)
By the way... What has anyone experienced with driving a previous Honda hard? Anyone drive their car hard till 300,000 miles? If I need to change/rebuild engines somewhere down the line, thats not a big deal for me. I'll pay for the fun, plus the D17 probably won't cost more than $1000 at most for a good low miles engine.

I've only had my vic for about 3 weeks, but I do it almost every chance I get. There's just something about the sound of VTEC that makes me wanna redline every gear (road willing)!
The engine sounds tight at 6,800 RPMs+ in 3rd gear but the lack of torque is not funny at all after 2nd gear. I usually shoot to the redline when I get on the freeway if there's room. Can't really go over 90MPH in 3rd gear anyhoo. I'm not afraid to push my car hard and if the VTEC in our cars is there to save gas when over 3,000 RPMs, why not use it? IronFist
I red line it at least a few times a month so the engine gets a taste of all the flavors. It's like having ABS, it's good to slam the brakes and release the fluids every once in a while.
If you keep your car in high RPMs for a long time you start to put more wear on the tranny and engine. Rev limiter kicks in at 7,000 RPMs. It's there to prevent you from damaging the engine.

once a day or so.... there's nothing like the growl of the engine & exhaust when passing some slow idiot... redlining the whole way, and throwing it into third a split second before flying back into his lane and speeding ahead. Our cars may not be extremely fast, but they are fun as hell to drive. I am one happy camper when I'm in my civic.
