First of all the escape and the tribute are just about the same truck. The only difference being trim, and interior plushness on the mercury. Oh and the price is slightly higher on the mercury. I know there were a few recalls on the trucks when they were first released. My friend at work has the mercury with the V6 and he likes it. He paid over $24,000 after tax, and that isnt the top of the line model either. If I was in the market for a small truck, I would look into the CRV, RAV 4, or the Suzuki V6. I cant think of the name of the suzuki truck, but I know its a good truck. Out of all the ones I named I would get the RAV 4. I heard the crv didnt to well in its crash test.

I think they're both OK, but I like the Mazda better because it has painted body panels, unlike the grey plastic the Ford has. But I'd get a CRV or a Rav4 over either of them . . .

the 4 door explorer trucks are cool! but i'd take a rav4 over all of them because it looks the best.. too bad it only packs a 4-cyl and costs a ridiculous amount.

Guess it also depends on what you're going to use it for, Carpe.

If it's just to haul people and things, and you're not going to take it off-road. . . just about any one of them would do. If you are going to "use" it. . . I'd opt for *cringe* the Exploder, Trailblazer, or even a RAV4. They're all pricier, but they're also capable. The CRV is also an excellent choice, but I can't comment on the crash test data as I haven't seen it. I've heard the Tribute and Escape are a good bang for the buck. . . but I just couldn't bring myself to own one. . . . VERY unrefined. In my opinion, if you're usually driving around in a 7th gen Civic. . . . you'd be sorely disappointed with an Escape in your driveway. In fact, that's probably where it'd be most of the time! lol

If you want to do some serious trail-busting. . . dude, get a Wrangler. They're VERY inexpensive to get into, and there are SO MANY mods for them. They're not as reliable, not as refined, and they are somewhat a minimalist vehicle. . . but they'll take you where other SUVs simply can't go. AND it's a convertible!

I'm picking up a Wrangler Rubicon next summer, myself. Keeping the Civic, of course!

Base Jeep Wrangler. . .new. . . under $17,000 I think.
LOADED Sahara with dual tops, etc. . . just under $27,000
(Sahara has: 6-speaker stereo with CD, A/C, cruise, standard hard top, I6 engine, bigger wheels and tires, nicer uphostery)

Yeah, I know. . . it's a Honda site, but you asked the question.

If you want to know more, I'm on a Jeep forum as well. Just PM me. Many of my friends own Jeeps, and the fun factor in them is unbeatable!

I know to many people with ford escapes. Even my cousin, and she chose it over a CRV
Whatever though, they nice in a clean simple way. Not very exiting though

how about the jeep liberty? same class and the price is comparable and you get jeep's reputation for off road handling and reliablity.

i rented a ford escape this wekend for a trip - leather interior , 6 disk changer - all the goodies- needless to say it lacked the power i thought it had but other than that, it was nice - My girlfriend just bout a trailblazer LTZ fully loaded - no that thing has power, would much rather have that .........
