Civic vs. VW Golf
Civic vs. VW Golf
I was looking at a Volkswagen Golf this weekend, and Honda needs to take some pointers from VW. What a nice car this was. I was looking at a base GL and it beats the LX and in some ways even the EX. It had color matching door handles and and color coded side folding mirrors. A rear wiper. 15" wheels, Michelins, a full size spare, a 2.0 l engine. I think it had the dark tinted bar at the top of the windshield. Side air bags and ABS are standard too. Being a GL it did NOT have power windows, cruise control, and power side mirrors. The seats were more comfortable too, and the interior seemed more spacious. It weighs about 300 pounds more too. On the down side, the mileage isn't as good, and where I live in a tough emissions state, they have to do something to it for compliance, which all Civics are designed to meet. The price was the most surprising thing. For this weekend at least, it was less than what I paid for my Civic. I was really tempted to buy one, but I was deterred by feeling guilty about trading in such a new car, and they were hesitant about a trade in value and I didn't have it appraised, I would want top dollar because it's a good car, and I don't think they would have offered it. Plus the emissions thing and the mileage. I am basically happy with the Civic, but I wish they would think about the little things, like VW does, with the tinted strip at the top of the windshield and the folding side mirrors. They make you trade up to the Accord for those thing, but Accords are too big for my parking space. Golf may be my next car.
My little brother has a 2002 golf. It came stock with all stuff: SEAT WARMERS, KICK A$$ STEREO (for stock that is), windshield wiper nozzle defrosters. its got nice response too. My boss where i deliver pizza's let me drive his 1999 1.8T one night when my boy brought his 96 Talon up to see me at work. we raced 2 times, i only put about ONE car length on him by third gear!!!! maybe it wasnt as powerfull as the newest 1.8T 's.
VW's now come with a pimp steering set-up; the back wheels slightly turn with enough force from a sharp turn to help keep traction w/ the road.

I'm bigger than you.

the 1.8t will murder our cars(stock atleast), and chipping it w/a few other mods will put that lil ride well over the 200 hp mark......................BTW I should be getting my new GTI before the end of July...

The base model of the golf comes with more but they are USUALLY more expensive than the LX or DX. It is 115hp stock and VW sometimes has alot of mechanical/electrical problems. I will stick with my civic for now, until i can afford my ferrari! hehe

....... i think VW's look nice..but i know 3 VW owners...and theyve all had alot of problems with thier brand new passat, passat wagon, and jetta. i would never get a VW on that experience alone
A 2.0 liter that delivers only 115 hp, there´s your answer: Heavy car with a powerless inefficient old engine, I bet thats a fun to drive car... Why pay an expensive car with an 8 valve single cam 80´s engine? The least powerful 2.0 besides this one is the Focus with 130.
More space inside? Did you actually get in the back seats? I had, several times in a friends Jetta and the Civic feels like a limo on the back compared to it.
The 1.8T is good, yes, but for the sticker price there are a lot of nicer options, with a trunk!

The Golf has 18 cu. ft. cargo due to the hatch, versus 12 cu ft for the Civic, The Golf wins for my purposes.
I am with you on the 1.8T, you got the point of my post. I want something that is reasonably priced, but with the finer touches of moving up to a higher model. I don't want a pocket rocket. There seems to be a big gap between the 2.0 and the 1.8T both in power and price. Maybe VW will replace the 2.0 with a better ordinary engine, within the next couple of years. I will be watching for that.
