My Day in Court
I had a thread on this topic earlier { Speeding Ticket; Cop “paced” my speed; I think discrimination } (http://www.2k1civic.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=3&threadid=37865&highlight_k ey=y&keyword1=ticket) Original Thread in case you were wondering what happened here goes: I got a ticket for going 50 in a 35, I was only truly doing 42, the cop based it on his “pace speed” for the 50mph that he came up with. I went to court to fight it. I had to postpone the first court date because I couldn’t make it. I went the following week and sat in a room with about 30 other traffic offenders. The judge called everyone up one at a time to sentence them. About 10 people went before me, a few felons, and about 8 DUI’s, then it was my turn. He sees that I have a speeding ticket and that my record was less than perfect, but after all these people with DUI’s he looks at me and goes “so you got caught speeding” jokingly. He has me go talk to the prosecutor who happens to be some girl late 20’s. I talk to her and get it reduced to 39 in 35, but I still wasn’t happy. I kept talking to her and got it reduced to an equipment violation, meaning a ticket for having windows tinted or something. Time came around to go pay, it was $35 for the ticket, $50 for the court costs and they ****’s charged me $10 for that 1 week extension I requested! Anyways, live and learn. Always goto court and fight tickets. It will save me at least $200 in insurance costs as a speeding ticket cost $45 annually for 3 years on just my civic alone.
Still wish it would have never happened, but this seems to be a pretty light sentence and a good lesson learned.
Also, what I’ve gathered about pleading discrimination…. don’t do it because it makes government workers (judges, cops, etc.) mad because they feel as if their being so scrutinized that they can’t do their job right. Even if you have a good point, it will be that much tougher to fight it because of their mentality on discrimination. Look at LA 2day…

Id have to say you did a good job. Over the last 2 years, Ive gotten 8 tickets knocked down to defective vehicle. Your insurance company wont look at them, but the minor ones I dont know if they care that much about or not.

A few weeks ago I got a speeding ticket. I was clocked at 87/65. I am glad the officer got me when he did because I got to well up over a 100mph. Anyhow, he was real nice and gave me the number for the driving school. I was going to get a lawyer but decided I would go into court and get myself out of it since I have a clean record (for the past 3 years anyway). So, I went down and the DA immediatly offered me a 74/65. What's so special about that you say? Well, in NC you don't get any points and the insurance carriers will not inflate your policy if the speeding ticket is 9mph or less over the limit, and you have no other tickets. So, no increase for me!
Always, Always, Always, go to your court date and talk to the DA or the judge, whatever the case may be. The only cost is your time and it's an opportunity to get your ticket reduced or dismissed. The DAs will usually offer you a lesser charge to help ease the court's work load. You have nothing to lose.
Oh, I got a ticket in another state while traveling when I was about 18 or so. I just showed up in court and the judge asked me if I was speeding a little bit. I got my ticket reduced from an 82/65 to 69/65 by just showing up and it was never found by my insurance company.
Always, Always, give it a shot!

The exact same thing happened to my boyfriend. We were in a 35 and the cop said he was going OVER 50, but he was only in second gear. He's definitly protesting this one in court. And don't get an HKS Hiper without a resonator. It's LOUD.

Always fight the ticket, I actually had fun when I "beat the system" and won in court. By the way I wasn't guilty of the charge to begin with
