New SI versus 2003 SVT Mustang
Hey everyone,
I was having a discussion with my friend about running the new Civic SI versus the 2003 SVT Mustang. He claimed that head to head price wise the Civic was better. That is, if you spent the difference in price between the two that the Civic SI would be faster? The SVT Mustang is mid 30K I believe, how much is the Civic SI? He said around 20K. I'm not trying to start a fight here, just wondering if you spent the difference in price (i guess about 12K) if you would have a Civic SI that could toast the SVT Mustang. For some reference, here is a link of the dyno graph for the 2003 SVT Mustang. This dyno is out of the box, no modifications: http://www.shoforum.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=15;t=004509
Horsepower to the wheels: 395
Torque: 375

eh.... skateboard against bicycle.... spend $100 fixing up the wheels and other things on the skateboard. The bicycle stills win on a straight path. Just my perspective... *do not quote me*

The civic Si is like what, $20k?? The SVT stang is $35k.
For that extra $15k, if you can't get the civic to beat the stang straightline, there is something wrong with you.
You can start with K20A2 and tranny swap. Get a custom turbo and nitrous. build the internals. All probably for around $15k. Throw on some drag radials or slicks and bam.... there you go. That thing should hit low 12's pretty easy.
The engine swap/tranny should be around $4,000 maybe? $5,000? custom turbo with goodies probably another $5,000. Internals, nitrous, and tires, probably the last $5,000.
Yeah it's apples to oranges any way you look at it. but yeah, the civic with $15k mods should do it. And don't forget how well those K20A2's respond to mods.
I'm seeing a couple dynos on the RSX-S's getting 20hp from exhaust and intake.

I don't know where all you guys get your car knowledge.. but i can spend 15 grand on almost anything and beat a stock mustang cobra.. come on people.. fifteen thousand dollars on your engine, transmission, and tires alone... i could spend 15k on my 2k1 ex.. and probably get pretty damn close.. even if i had to gut it out, custom turbo, and one seat.. still.. i wouldn't spend 35k on a car because it's fast.. i'd have to love it... also guys.. coming from a guy who's first love was a mustang.. if you spend around $2500 on that new cobra.. it'll be pushing 550hp to the wheels easy.

Like they said...its pointless...the SVT would end up being more reliable, and if you put the same amount of money into the SVT as you did the Si, you could probably waste Vipers, etc.

2003 mustang cobra: 4.6l SUPERCHARGED V8 putting out 390 BHP and driving the REAR (read: right wheel drive) wheels. 500 bucks get you a blower pully and over 400 WHEEL hp. his friend is a moron, and anyone that would spend 15K on a new civic Si, just to makeit go fast in a straight line is also a numbnutz. If all you wanted to do was go fast in the 1/4 mile with a civic, there are much eaiser and MUCH more affordable hondas to do it with. BTW the ford would still be getting better MPG in that case.
That makes a difference. You could probably find a 99 si here in LA for around 15G, expect to pay well over 35G for the Cobra after dealer markups, plus tax since it's bought at a dealership. The difference will then actually come to more than $20 thousand. Even though the 03 cobra will be my weekend cruiser (I wish), the si with an engine swap and lotsa boost should have no problems winning.
The best way to beat a SVT is to buy a 92 CX for 2 grand and dump in 33 grand into it. That way both cars cost 35 grand. that is what i call a fare race.............Bye bye SVT
Stallion- jus to clarify... where you arguing on what car would be more practical at sed hp numbers? or where you arguing if a 4 banger could beat a cobra svt knowing you wanted the fastest car of the two to race an you only had 35 g's to spend?
for the first the cobra would be more practical.... casue the high psi would wreck havoc on the civ after awhile..... but if it was over the second reason.... I'd say you could easily to it.... Brand new at the time you could get an si for 20,000.. but with mark up for cobra.. your lookin at 38,000 so you have 18,000 to play with....
also those cobra numbers are stagering.. but that huge engine also makes the cobra over a thousand pounds heavier.. so to get into the 11-12 sec range to beat the cobra.... the si would only have to have 300-320 hp to the wheels.. which is quite doable with 18 g
so yes.. can be done.. practical no

thats halarious. i like how over the course of this thread "due to dealer markups" the 32K cobra became a $35K car, and now 38K. lmao.

Matt this is the last time I get into a drunken car fight at a bar with you... .an joe shutup... ford qouted a price rang of 35-38 thou..... the whole point of the argument was he didnt think a 4 banger could beat a cobra an still cost less than the cobra.... an for some dumb reason (prob casue I was drunk) picked the 99 si with 15,000 grand put into it off the top of my drunken head an he didnt believe me.. then he came on an posted about a new si beatin a cobra....
so basically.... the point is.... there are any number of ways.. any number of 4 bangers that for the price of a cobra.. can be supped up to beat it

your quoting old stats. Ford announced that "it would debut UINDER 35K" way back when. I agree dealer markup will ensue durring the first year of production, but the price has already been nailed down to a ~32,000 MSRP.
