A car that will last a long time??
My mom is currently looking for a new/1 to 2 year used car.
Her main requirement is longevity. She wants this car to last her 15 to 20 years. She is thinking that she will rack up 200,000 to 300,000 miles on the car. She does not want to have to do any major adjustment on the car or engine during that time. (the Mitsubishi Gallant that has 140,00 on it is burring oil and needs a re-hall on the engine. She wants her next car to go 200K to 300K before that happens)
Which make and/or model would fit this requirement
The cars she are looking at are the BMW 5 or 7 series, Lexes GS or LS, Infinti Q45 or I35, and Acura, and MB, and Audi; -just so you get a feel for the type of car she is looking at.
Thanks

Well, in that category of cars, the new G35 from Infinity is Hype...Its brand new, and its really nice inside and out. Another good selection would be the BMW 540 or even the M3 is she wants the performance. The Audi has an unreliable track record in my book. And she can always go with the Lexus GS300 or the Acura TL. Personally, if I had one wish to get any car in the world I wanted, I'd pick the BMW M5, no doubt. Its the total package if you ask me, but its almost 75K for it, a little out of my price range. Peace, and I hope your mom lets u drive it every once in a while.

Well I think she is leaning towards a V8 than a V6.
And as for Audi: thier A6 V8 is 76.1 inch wide and the A8's are 79.0 inch wide. It has to fit in the garage, and the 2000 BMW 740i we put in the garage today was just a bit too big, but we can modify the garage a bit to make it fit, but anything bigger - 73.3 - wouldn't not fit.
So now that Audi is out of the game what's next?
BTW: cant do the M3 - needs 4 door / cant do the X5 - wants a sedan not SUV / cant do the M5 - too expensive not quite the car she is looking for.

I don't think the Acura is what she is looking for.
She likes all of the bells and whistles.
Number 2 on her requirements is that it has Navigation.
I think she is nuts.

Well, how about the new G35 from Infinity. Check it out. I read the article in the May edition of Car and Driver and they loved it. Also, the GS300 by Lexus is awesome. Both have great power, 4 doors and all the bells and whistles. OH, and they cost less than 35 grand. Great mom cars...

Yes I agree that the G35 from Infinity and the GS300 by Lexus fit for the type of car she is looking for,
BUT
Will it go to 200,000 to 300,000 miles without a major over-hall? Will it last that long. I understand that there will be a thing or two that will happen along the way, but will the engine last that long?

Well, the GS300 is a Toyota, and my friends moms Camry has over 340k miles on it, its a 1990 and it still runs strong. OH, and its never been overhauled either. And my brothers Celica went 230K b4 he sold it. He bought it with 150k and drove the **** out of it, and it lasted. I have all the confidence in the world in Toyotas lasting. As for the G35, its a Nissan. They are good, but I don't know much about going over 200k without major engine work.

You said the M5 is too expensive at 69k for a new one, and your looking at the 7 series that start at 65k? If you can afford a 730 you can afford an M5. Or, you can go with the 330xi for about 35k. It has a 225bhp 3.0 litre engine, pretty respectable and a 4 door too.

The other cars I dont think will stand up to the test as well.
I red that the Audi is the worst for repairs and stuff, that in a survey they did, it was in the shop the most for repairs.

I agree with crash...as i said b4, the audi's are unreliable imo...the bimmer is nice, but any honda product, i.e. acura or accord, will do just fine. Hey, you can even try a camry or avalon, those are nice too.
I agree with GoCivicRacerGo, the LS430 is definitely one of the most well-made cars on the road. It might be a bit big, though. Another car I recommend is the Acura TL (type-S or not). My cousin's a hotel valet, and he says its a better-designed car than many cars that are double the price.
IMO if you want something that really last and trouble free in the long run you shouldn't get a car with too much toys. More gadgets means more chances for things to break.
But if you really want a car loaded with toys, go with Lexus. Toyotas are known for reliability in the long run. Not just the engine and tranny but all the electrical system, the AC etc. Just look at how many driver's ed instructors use Toyota Corolla as the trainer. Many of them has over 300000 miles on the odo and it's vitually all city driving.
Most Honda are OK too...but Honda sheetmetal and factory rust proofing are not as good as Toyota. So the body might be in pretty bad shape when your engine and stuff are still good 10 years down the road.
Avoid European cars. Their drivetrain last but electrical stuff are more problematic than Japanese cars.
