Whats the deal with the chip in the key
Is this some kind of security feature for the New Civic and do they really make the car harder to steal and duplicate the key..???

No offense to anyone but i think this key thing is a gimmick(if i actually used the word right).... if someone wanted to steal the car they'll find a way
If that thing actually worked.. our cars wouldn't be on the most stolen list...am i right? insurence would be cheaper

dont know bout that check out the 2001 civic .......i think the count is for 99 down without the chips gonna have to wait a while till the 2202 cencus comes out with the real stats i think it's going to go down for sure.
There are two ways to steal a new Civic.
1. Get a tow truck and pull away.
2. Either get an original key, or have an new ECU with a key to match that ECU. The key has a transponder chip that engages the vehicle ECU. Without the proper key, the ECU shuts down ignition, gas, and other functions making it pretty darn hard to steal the old way.
For the money, it is an awesome setup. It is easy to use and really does work. As for insurance quotes, when the statistics actually start counting the 7th generation Civics, the overall rates will go down.

The engine immobilizer does seem to be a fairly technologically advanced feature in the Civic, also considering its price category. The '03 Corolla looks like it beats the Civic in some areas, but I haven't noted an engine immobilizer as one of its features.

I work at a Hotel where the Valets lost the key to a Ford Expedition with one of those chips built in to the keys. The owner of the car swore we wouldn't be able to make a key because of the chip, & would have to go to the dealer for a replacement. Instead we called the Hotel locksmith who busted out a special computer that hooked up to the car & allowed him to program a new key. The hotel Locksmith made a key new key the opened the door and also started the truck up in 15min.

Rick is right - the new immobilizer system in the EM Civic and the DC5 (RSX) relies on the ECU to match with the key in order to start the car. So if you swap an RSX engine + ECU into your Civic, you can't use your Civic key to start the car. You have to go to an Acura dealership and have them make a new key that matches the new ECU. In case you're wondering - yes, that means you'll have two keys - one to open the car, and one to start the car.

theres few other ways.. but anyways.. just because of the chip in the key don't think that ur car can't be stolen. there was someone who posted up a while back that their car got stolen. also i seen stolen 2002 benz, navigators, and honda's where i work. but if the theif can't steal the car .. then he'll just f*ck it up so u can't drive it.
As I said, there are ways to steal your Civic. But for the money (basically free) you get a quick and painless device that slows down most thieves. No, I am not a car thief, I worked on the opposite end at a shop that repaired theft repairs. Basically a thief would steal or break it and we would fix or replace it. Any system will have faults. But at least the Civic relies on the ECU. Yes, a smart thief could grab his own ECU and plug it in, then pull the lock and start the car. But this takes time and your biggest ally is time. The longer it takes, the less of a chance of stealing your car.
And Htown, when you do the engine swap, you will have to use your RSX ignition to start your car with your RSX ignition or reset the ECU to recieve a new key code. But rekeying the doors and trunk to match the ignition key is not that hard. If you take out the cylinders, any good locksmith can do them for about 20 bucks each.
And yes, there are plenty of thieves who use a tow truck to steal cars. Think about it, no one usually watches when two guys come in and pick up a car in a tow truck. It seems normal so they do it and leave. Repo men use tow trucks to avoid damaging your car. So if someone really wanted your car, nothing can stop it.
The main issue that this will concern people is the area of remote starting systems. You will have to use a device which will engage a programmed chip into the ignition pickup only when the remote start is working. That way the system is only bypassed when you are using remote start.
Take it easy.
