98'' Honda Accord Vtec System Failure/ Transmission short

Will paypal someone $20 if they can tell me what they know on this:

Hey I have a honda Accord LX 1998. Engine light came on a week ago and it looks like I have two errors: P0705 (probable cause short in transmission range circuit) and P1259 ( Vtec System Malfunction). I have been driving for a week or two with engine light on because I just don't have the money to fix it right now..I dont know much about cars and would really appreciate the help. Are these serious problems that need to be taken care of right now? And how much do you think it would cost to pay a shop to fix these problems? Thanks so much for the help I appreciate it.

Re: 98'' Honda Accord Vtec System Failure/ Transmission short

For the VTEC code, CHECK THE ENGINE OIL!
Fill it if low or get it changed if overdue.
Seems like 98% of the time, this code is caused by low oil.
Old car, high miles, oil consumption is expected, but it is the drivers responsibility to check and top up the oil (and other fluids) regularly.

Trans code: My list only shows P1705, same description.

The computer had to detect more than one input from the range switch for a period of one second or longer.
Do any of the dash indicator lights (PRND etc.) come on when they aren't supposed to?

Likely intermittent bad range switch, but could be intermittent short in wiring or stuff like water in a connection, etc. Hard to tell from here.

I'd say to erase the codes and see how long it takes to come back. Then diagnose accordingly.

Cost? No way. How long is a stick?
