Auto-Cross on OEM tires
I know the OEM firestone tires are nothing to scream about (pun intended), but has anyone done an auto-cross using the tires in their 4-door sedan? There's 1 around here in a couple of weeks and my friend is asking me to go. Says I'll learn to handle my car better in tight corners, slaloms etc. Thanks for the input

Well I mean you could autocross on anything want, but I would recommend upgrading atleast +2 sizes (215/45-17), you need a MUCH bigger patch. The stock firestones are good for massive understeer. I raced 2 events with the oem firestones, and I finished bottom of the totem-pole, and used about half of the tires.
I upgraded to Bridgestone Potenza - S03 Pole Position tires, and it made a world of difference. Ofcourse you can go with slicks, but unless their DOT approved, you won't be able to drive w/them on the street. Also, slicks are much more expensive...anyways with any new tire, get them heat cycled before you use them....especially if you are going to autocross with them...
After that its just suspension and skill....

PONGSTER: Yes the firestones suck compared to high performance tires but they performed better than I thought they would. I auto-x with them in April and May and they held up ok...I was pulling better times with them compared to other peeps with better tires. They do well in the slaloms but becareful in the 180 degree turns and pivots...If you dont know how to control your car in those turns you will lose control. Another thing, the sidewalls are very soft, this past Sunday I tried running 48psi in the front and I still kinda rode on the sidewall...Next month I'll try 50 to 52psi in the front, you can leave the rear between 32 to 34 psi...
when i was in VIR i did a real road course liekt he one in carlisle i used my stock tires. they handleing wasnt that bad but they were screaching around the corners i still havent done it yet with my kumhos yet.
