Rep Power: 164 2013 Hyundai Veloster pwns Civic Si in MPG
I just heard of this today. The 2013 Veloster has a turbo option. 1.6 liter, 200HP, 194 torque@1750RPM !! The EPA tests aren't out yet, but they predict around 38MPG highway, 27MPG city for the manual and probably about the same for the automatic.
2012 Civic Si: 22city, 31hwy
pwned.
Please Honda, DI+Turbo + electrical system recuperation (What Porsche, Mazda does), as long as reliability stays excellent

Your comparing a nice car (civic si) to an ugly one (veloster). Your also comparing a Hyundai to a Honda. I mean, sure, the performance may be better but overall the civic PWNS it as you would say.

LOL,
Besides people can 'predict' anything on something that doesn't exist. Doesn't make it true and it especially doesn't make it true in the real world.

I'm highly considering buy a Kia Forte. Not because it's better than a Civic, only because it's cheaper and I rack up miles like nobodies business.. That being said, I might still go with a Honda because I don't know the reliability of a Kia after 5 years. I know they have come a long way but there are no numbers yet because their models are too new. Are you willing to take the risk?

...are you really comparing the mpg of a 1.6L engine to a 2.4L? the fact that it hits 200hp turbo'd and does 36mpg and the 2.4 has 200hp NA should tell you the 2.4 is abviously going to burn more fuel. if you turbo the civic it'd be hitting some mad HP numbers and the mpg would go down but it'd be worth it to see those numbers.
as well the honda b16b, a 1.6L engine, the one in the JDM type R civic had 185hp none turbo and around 30-35 mpg depending on driver and that was way back in the day.

remember guys, a turbo will substantially wear down an engine quicker than that of a NA engine... its just the rules of physics.

Ya! I'm glad everyone is so loyal to Honda. I too question long term reliability of the Veloster and the aerdynamic efforts makes the front looks like a fish, well the Focus looks like that too.
I also question of course their 'prediction' but I think it's posisble to hit their prediction.
What if we take away the reliability question mark and the looks, we have a car that's as powerful as the Civic Si but gets way more mileage and I don't think it lacks in low end power or turbo lag but who knows. So the drivetrain is more efficient, and it makes sense if it's reliable with no performance compromises.
Who says naturally aspirated engines are the way to go? Chevy put a turbo on the Cruze for a reason, although probably not as much boost.
Is it the piston rings that can wear out from too much boost or can they make it strong enough to last as long as a non-turboed engine, and the other components of the engine? Does anyone know the most miles driven on a sporty turbo non-diesel engine?
Competition like this is great because then we know Honda will try it's best to improve the Si.

a lot of manufactures are making smaller displacement engines with a turbo to achieve more fuel milage while maintaining the performance of a bigger displacement engine

Hyundai and Kia ADMIT to the MPG lies!!!!!!

Owners of select vehicles will get a debit card for life for the miles they've driven and the miles in the future. MPG estimates have changed, for instance the manual Veloster was 28/40 but now it's 27/37! Auto V 29/38 revised to 27/35 So you can get a debit card that gives the difference in MPG, given local gas prices, and they assume +15% gas price hike to help cover customer stress.
Only 138HP and less MPG than a '12 Civic.
The Turbo Veloster is worse at 24/35 revised MPG with the manual transmission. Still better (barely) EPA than the Si. Only 24/31 revised with the auto tranny -> no dual dry clutch, just torque converter.

Hyundai did the testing for their vehicles, but they did the 'coast down' test incorrectly somehow and it took them years to admit it. The EPA just tells Hyundai how to test.

No, EPA sets the rules and conditions of the tests, manufacturers run the tests (in labs) and the EPA spot checks the results across all manufacturers for compliance. In this case though the EPA launched an investigation after enough complaints.

That being said, I miss the days when Civics would push 35+ mpg
