Help w/ Speeding Ticket Please!

- I know there have been some posts on these before, and I searched and read, but I'm a newbie when it comes to the law. I was racing off to some school thing for my girlfriend and I got caught with radar doing 53 in a 35. (Ouch.) It's a big street, I was going too fast, anyways, its clearly my fault. He wrote me up for "Basic Speed Law" or something like that. Now. What can I do to prevent (as much as possible) points going on my license/insurance going up? What do you think my fine will be? I have one at fault accident over two years ago... and I'm almost 19. No previous tickets. I read something about contacting the prosecutor? How does that work? I messed up, my fault I just would like any possible help in not paying $700 a month in insurance... I'll take my lumps, fines, traffic school, etc... just what can I do? Thanks in advance!

If you haven't gotten a ticket in the last three years, you might be able to go to traffic school. My first ticket was for 55 in a 35 and for driving on the wrong side of the rode. My ticket was $150 with traffic school & now there is nothing on my record.

I forgot to say that was three years ago. I don't know if tickets have gone up much since then. I got written up for 55 in a 35 but realistically I was going 85. He didn't gun me but knew I was going fast so he asked me how fast I was going so 55 sounded better than 85

You get reduction papers. The DA approves them. It can all be done through the mail even. Basically if your record is cool, your ticket gets reduced. I got a 48 in a 30 reduced to "failure to obey traffic device". Its like I did a right on red when I couldn't or something. A lot less points on the record. One point vs three I think. Check into it. Obviously this can't be used more than once in a five year timespan or something.

Good luck.

Oh ... btw the fine usually isn't reduced. Depending on things its probably a standard $100 or $150.

The cop did you a favor by using the basic speed law. The penalties can be more severe if you can be charged with a specific speed via a radar or laser device. You should speak to the prosecutor first to see if there is anything they are willing to offer you. Here in New York, they offer something to the effect of a fine and no points on the record. Sometimes, they will also dismiss the charge(s) in the interests of justice assuming that the defendant has no previous record. Keep in mind that your insurance company will usually still be able to see that you received a summons, and its disposition (guilty, not guilty, dismissed) regardless if any points are assigned to your record.

To contact the prosecutor, look at the summons. There will be a court to which the summons is "returnable." Contact this court by phone and request to know who the prosecutor is for that particular case. Then contact that individual/department. I wouldn't count on a fine reduction, this is how the state/county makes its money.

- Alright, who would I contact about getting "reducation papers." And I go to traffic school AFTER I go to court right, and see if they will let me? Oh and to answer your question: the car isn't really mine, I'm just paying the insurance on it each month. My dad (since he put the down payment down) wanted a NEW car, and of course he had to get an automatic =/ The car is mine until fall, then when I start college I'm all on my own. Time to start saving up =/ The ticket doesn't help!

I believe reduction papers are issued by the court to which the summons is returnable, but New York does not have reduction papers. Here, you can appear at court and discuss the case with the prosecutor. Contact the court and inquire about the reduction procedure.

Thank god someone on here actually admits to being at fault for speeding and not cursing out the cops! I don't know if you can do it in your state but I went to court and got on my hands and knee's, begging the judge to not give me points, heh. If you've never really gotten a ticket they'll give you a PBJ (probation before judgement). What that is, is the points are put on hold for a year and if you get no speeding tickets for a year, the points will go away, however, if you do get another ticket, the points go off hold. I luckily got a PBJ because the cop said I was polite and nice...Ahh, thank god for cool Troopers.

Here that would be called ACOD (Adjournment in contemplation of decision), meaning that the case is adjourned (dismissed) provided you do not have any other problems within the time period set fourth by the judge.

since u doing 53 in 35 zone, u could get a ticket more than $100,cuz under 15mph is $87. I just got a ticket a month ago, 65 in 50 zone.....end up paid $87 for ticket, 29 traffic information, and 25 traffic school =$141 total !!!!.........now my record is cleared now........what a wasted on $$$$ 141...........

you can go to traffic school if you haven't gone in the last 18 mos. and you can do it online now too, ifyour court accepts them. And that just means that you wont get points off your record. you will still have to pay a fine.

i gotta ticket a while ago for goin 63 in a 45...the cop hid in the trees off the road in the shoulder. but i just sucked it up and payed the $160 fine. but check out traffic school online....it was so simple!
