How much do you pay for License Plates in your State?
I have had my car for almost a year. Also here in Minnesota, when you buy a car, the plate has the previous month on it. Example I bought it May, plate says April. I bought it on May 25 2001. And a couple of days ago my mom gave me the renewal notice for the plates. Its 193.50. Damn!!!! When I bought my car they I paid 219, with a 3 dollar plate fee, 4 transfer tax, and another 4 transfer fee. Than there is also a state/deputy fee of 3.50. Thats a total of 230.50. This is just for 2 little ugly little blue stickers. Our cool governor, Gov. Ventura changed some plate law, but I havent seen that go into effect yet, probably because of some other government crap going on. I was wondering what other pay for plates, If it is just as high here. I think Minnesota must be one of the highest priced states for plates.
Motor vehicle registration in New York State as is the case in most other states is set by a statutory limit. That is, the dealer is not able to jack it up to make a profit. That statutory fee can not exceed $200. The weight of the vehicle is the variable in figuring out what the cost will be. Registrations in New York state expire every two years, and you are charged the renewal fee every two years (again based on weight). Vanity registration is an additional statutory $37.25 and you are charged that every two years as well if you keep those plates.

In some states, the plate fee is directly related to the value of the car. I think Cali. and Conn. have this. Sooo, the more expensive or newer your car is, the more your plates are gonna cost.
IL is just a flat fee per plate, but the fee changes depending if you have Normal (jumble of letters and numbers), Personalized (you pick what it sez, but it must have a number in it somewhere), or Vanity (usually all letters). There are also other special plate you could get here, such as Vietnam Veteran, Pearl Harbor Survivor, Firefighter, Prevent Violence, Sportsman, etc etc etc...
The stupid Sec. of State of IL site is down, so I can't look up the exact prices. I think it goes like this:
regular plates $78
personalized $regular + $10?
vanity $91

I dont know if i would blame Ventura. Prices for plates have been expensive way before he entered office. I thinks its all the people in the House and Senate that didnt pass his license bill, because he wanted to change it. Knowing the government, the bill got killed in some committe.
In Mississippi we r getting robbed, my plate every year is nearly 400 bucks!! And its more for people with bigger/sportier vehicles. And usually i have to pay this with an insurance payment so in 1 month time ill pay $800 thank god its only 1 time a year but jesus.

In Indiana there is a $20.75 a year registration fee + a county excise tax that varies by county. In mine, this tax was $344 last year, but I only had to pay half of that because of a 'tax cut', which Im not sure happens every year. The excise tax is related to value of the car when it was new, and it goes down every year. Personalized plates cost an additional $48 now.
Tennessee:
$ 23.00 Standard Plate/Renewal Fee
$ 25.00 County Wheel Tax (only about 12 areas charge a fee like this)
$ 25.00 If you want to personalize your regular plate or get one of the SIXTY specialty plates LINK
$ 25.00 Extra if you want to personalize of the specialty plates!
Tennessee may be 49th in education, but we have DARN nice license plates for cheap

Here in NH, it depends on the book value of the car..
They charge $18 per $1000 according to Kelley Blue Book then for vanity plates, it's a flat rate of $25 but you only get 6 characters.
