friends don't let friends buy stupid...
i've got a friend (whom we'll call "Joaquin", pronounced HO-a-queen... lol) who currently owns a '97 civic LX sedan. i think it's got about 80,000 miles on it, and a basketball-size dent on the lower part of the passenger's-side rear door. i guess after watching fast & furious a few times, he wants to become a ricer (i mean... racer) and mod his car, putting his money under the hood though. anyway, joaquin has decided that his civic is too weak and is now looking at a '96 mitsubishi eclipse gs (good condition, just needs a new clutch, btw). he says its selling for the same price his car is worth, and his parents are willing to pay any extra in the selling process (fixing the door, etc.)
i like eclipses. i still think the 2nd-gens look sweet (especially a spyder, top-down; or a gsx with a supra spoiler and 18" wheels), and that some of them would be really fun and unique cars (the turbo/AWD models).
the main reason he wants the eclipse is because it "looks sportier with 2 doors" and "has more power". i absolutely agree with that, but is that reason enough to ditch the civic, considering the following....
- this is an eclipse GS -- hardly a step up from the base RS. it doesn't even have power windows or locks!
- this is an eclipse GS -- NOT the turbo! he says he wants to have it as an option, but aren't you pretty limited to a few expensive choices for the NA engine?
- this is an eclipse GS -- not the turbo, not the AWD, not the spyder. bo-ring!
- this is a DSM product -- don't they have a questionable quality reputation, especially the 2nd-gen eclipse?
- this is a DSM product -- nothing like seeing some posers 3 times a day in a riced-out TALON that think they can waste you (and probably can since you didn't get the turbo!)
considering all of the stuff above, plus the fact that insurance is gonna be HELLA higher, am i the only one that thinks he's making a bad decision to go with an eclipse (GS, anyway?) did anyone here previously own an eclipse and say something good/bad about them? anything would be helpful to my dear mexican friend joaquin!!! he'll do a dance around a sombrero riding a donkey pinata for anyone that replies. muchas gracias, yo tengo burrito en mi pantalones! spanish class sucks!

I have a couple friends that have those. They seem to be the same as the 7th gen civic in the sense you either got a perfect one or you got one that had nothing but problems. A lot of people I know that had the 2nd gen eclipse had a lot of electrical problems. Whatever he does is is choice but that's my 2 cents.
off topic: bhayes82 I notice you are in MN I may be moving back there has the scene imporved and where exactly are you?

I would stay with honda. The reliability, quality, and resale value are way too good to be buying a mitsubishi. Although, if he has a savings account to pay for the repairs, tell to go ahead and get it.
How many ponies does the Gs put out anyway, cuz there is this skrawny lil terd talkin about his 2000 eclispe GS is the shizel. I just wanna beat him really bad!!!
If he wants raw speed, he should go for a 1G GSX or TSi AWD...the "wedge" style. These have stronger motors, and they are also lighter than any other Eclipse/Talon/Laser. Keep in mind that they are not reliable, and anything that makes power also breaks parts - They do through drivetrains often.
They are easy to get into 12s, and there are even daily driver 10 second DSMs out there!

how many miles or on the eclipse. If im right a gs has the dohc 2.0 motor. If it is when those things hit 60,000 miles the throw the timing belts like clockwork, and that ain't pretty!
Mitsubishi motors arent the most reliable motors in the world. Exspecially compared to honda. I really can't recomend a mitsu to anyone, i had a 93 eclipse that was a nightmare.

They are a little spotty when it comes to reliability...you can't beat Honda's reputation in that category. Besides, there's so much he can do with an EK Civic, considering the swapability of JDM/Integra motors in them. I like the styling of the eclipses, but considering all that he can do with the LX, I'd stick by it...
Now where's my dance?

I am a friend for whom this thread was started, just to clear a few things up. My friend is planning on purchasing a used eclipse for several reason; 40% more hp (147) then his current civic lx(107 so i've heard correct em if i'm wrong), 2 door model (sedan not needed), sportier look, and he just wants one. Yes I know honda is known for their reliability, but this is a chance he is willing to take. The reason he would not consider a motor swap in his current civic, is b/c of his parents, they would not go for that, nor would they front the money for it either. This is an easy way for him to get something he wants and he is willing to accept the possable consequences of purchasing a used car. As bhayes82, one of my good friends stated, the eclipse he is looking at needs a new clutch, that is not true, at some point yes, but it was checked out by a reputable mechanic, not only the clutch, but the entire car and all was said to be in working order. Feel free tom bombard me with whatever rebutals you deisre.

115HP for the LX if I remember correctly (No way it can be slower than my EK DX at 106HP!) If he's willing to take the chance, then go for it...I wouldn't do it myself, doesn't sound like a wise choice considering the risk.
A kid around the block bought an EK Civic just like mine, and he got it because it had altezza lights. Too bad for him he didn't really check out the car, since it had a salvaged title on it, and doesn't run smooth. That's an extreme case, but just a good observation about someone getting a car because that's 'what he wanted.'
Incidentally, my car is not what I wanted...it's slow, has no options, but it's a 97, I paid 5900 for it, and it had 58K miles on it. It was the prudent choice over what I really wanted. I wouldn't go back on my car any day!

Well, IMO I do think it's a waste of money and I'd rather stick with a Civic, but it's what your friend counts not ours... Yah' know what I mean?

Oops! I was thinking the 7th gen Civic...
I have a friend that had a 2001 Eclipse and had nothing but problems. It has less than 50,000 miles and it won't even run due to an electrical problem. She's probably going to end up giving it to the finance company and telling them to persue the dealer under California "lemon laws".
First about the insurence between a '97 baby blue civic lx and a '96 Red Eclipse GS...the insurence is exactly the same if you are on my auto insurence. However, for all you kids that want more horsepower...example turbo...the insurence drasticly increases. Sure I'd like one...but at this time extra money doesn't flow out of my pockets.
As far as nonbiasjeepowner said, the horsepower is a 40% increase from the Civic. Now all you rice boys...how much would it take to increase the horsepower in a civic by 40 (not rice horsepower, talking about the real thing)? Next for all you rice boys...a stock Eclipse will beat a stock Civic, off the line and higher end speed. A friend of mine (nonbiasjeepowner) can out me in my Civic in a jeep grand cherokee. Now, is something wrong with that picture? We have very similar driving skills. You want proof? He's willing to race.
Also, its a four door civic. I was flossin with my friend the other day and we saw a riced out stratus (4 door of course) and it look goofy. So why rice out a four door civic? And a two civic? I don't want to spend the extra money on an ex, and the lx only has a four door option. Why not get a dx you ask? No tach...
About the power windows and locks...in a four door car it very nice. But when take a two door car, I'm willing to go a drop in price for taking the extra energy to reach across a seat and roll down the window or unlock the door.

I happen to like working on cars, I jsut last summer installed a Mopar MPI kit on my wranger and i love doing it that how you learn about shizzle n shiznit. What chu drankin'? I'm drankin' crissy and my 89 wrangler (box on wheels) would beat any stock 2k1 or 2k2 civic in the quarter mile...

I am not surprised the cherokee is taking a civic. You didn't say what engine or year of the jeep. None of us worry about jeeps, they are the worst vehicles on the road.

Would you care to say why you think a grand cherokee is the worst vehicle on the road? I don't think there the best, but there not the worst by any means, even our friend bhayes82 who started this thinks they are some of the most capable suv's out there. Now i know that a civic and a jeep are two diff types of cars (suv) but it is unbelievable how bias most of you are, the grand cherokee that i have is a 95 with the 318v8, the 89 wrangler is a 4.2L inline 6 (258), I have nothing agaist jeeps, honda's, and mitsu's, i just like questioning what others think. i would love to have a 2 door honda anyday, but thats not what my parents have. I would love a 3000gt or an S2000 but thats not what we have. I could go and buy any of the cars i just mentioned with no monthly payments, but i am not the type to spend my money like that. Most of you here obviously own civics and are incredable bias towards them, you need to realize that other things out there can be just as good as your lil rice rocket, (which i don't mind by the way).

Of course there are other cars faster/better, but we're enthusiasts at them! Just like the mustang tuners of their generation
You gotta admit tho, for how quick and reliable they are cranked out, Hondas are pretty decent...
btw, if you have that kind of money for an S2000, you could easily get a built 6th or 5th gen Civic that would blow away a lot of cars...and that's good stuff! Reliability with a 160HP engine on a light frame....woo daddy!!!

ummm... hey guys... what a coincidence i'd see you here
first off, the 93-98 grand cherokee has a 5.2L V8 with torque the size of an african male's *******. its also not that much heavier than a civic. this results in a 0-60 time of around 8 seconds. nothing's wrong with that picture except your belief that a 4-banger civic should kill a V8 SUV off the line! (personally i can't wait to see your eclipse get wasted by the same '95 grand cherokee.)
speaking of the jeep, its true that i do think they're among the most capable and powerful SUVs. if i myself were into offroading or camping or other outdoors stuff, i'd probably want a grand cherokee. HOWEVER, i would NEVER want one as a daily driver. they get gas mileage too horrible to mention; and are a lot of work (and money) to maintain. i know my dad's '98 was a bad apple of the bunch, but it did scar its reputation with all of the crap the went wrong. Fuel gauge had to be replaced 3 times, 1 new differential, 1 new radiator, and other minor stuff in less than 4 years. but as for the "average" jeeps, even those have their share of problems... i just read today that chrysler is recalling the grand cherokee with the 4.0 i-6 AGAIN.
next issue: this is a CIVIC site. we own and drive CIVICS. we LIKE our CIVICS. of course we're gonna be f*cking biased! i'm a bit surprised that you two actually registered here, but whatever... just DON'T put any pictures of your jeep or non-power-windows eclipse up in the members' rides.
sure, there are better cars out there. my next favorite car (besides the civic) is the audi A4. the base model is just under $30,000. then comes the BMW 330xi. this car starts out at around $40,000. the point is that these "better" cars all cost MUCH more money than most of us have. secondly, what is "better"? a car that does 0-60 in 4.8 seconds -- or a car that does it in 9, holds 5 people, gets 35 MPG, and will last 20 years?
also, considering there are 3000-some members here, "most" of us are not riceboys, and "most" of us don't drive rice rockets. if you wanna be welcome here, don't **** everyone off right away...
for the record: lets look at some numbers, provided by edmunds.com and other automotive review sites, not here's-what-bob-says at epinions!
***THE 2.0L in the eclipse is the SAME engine as... the NEON!!!***
97 Eclipse GS: 130lb-ft, 140hp, 2855lb, 8.6 sec. (i saw more sites pointing to 9.0, but i'll just give it 8.6 to be nice)
01 Civic LX: 110lb-ft, 115hp, 2465lb, 8.4 sec.
01 Civic EX: 114lb-ft, 127hp, 2553lb, 7.9 sec.
02 Civic Si: 7.2 sec.
97 Civic LX 9.5 sec
again, yes we're biased, especially against cars even the lowly DX can kill!!!
it's your money.

Yo hay-z be up in dis thang fo sho! One thing i would argue is the weight of a civic and jeep are similar? hardly i believe a new civic 4 door sedan weighs in around 2600 pounds while the jeep is 3900 and some change...whut! I think those are pretty close to being right.
i do have to reiterate this fact...african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male ******* african male *******
