2002 Hond Civic EX Vs. 2003 Hyundai Tiburon

Not to Dis the Civic or anything but where I live, I'd have to pay about $19,063.40 (this price include the cost of the vehicle + Sales Tax) for a EX Coupe, and for a LX I'd have to pay about $17353.40, this also inludes tax). Now the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon Stock, will cost me around $18,669.20 and it comes loaded! the Hyundai Tiburon comes Stock with a 2.0 liter (Aluminum block) DOHC Engine @ 140hp@6000rpm and it has 133 torque @ 4800rpm. That's more than the Civic EX. It also comes Stock with power mirrors, fog lights, remote keyless Entry w car alarm, 16'' alloy wheels, Driver's and Front Passenger Airbags and Side Airbags, AC is standard too. It also comes with power locks, cruise control, moonroof, Stereo with CD player and 6 speakers, and adual chrome-tipped exhaust, and a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty! And if you don't want a manual, you can get a 4-speed automatic sportshift (lets you shift without using a clutch or just live it in drive)

Now the 2002 Hond Civic EX does not come with dual exhaust or side airbags, or a sportshift automatic if you want one. The warrantiees on our Civic's our the standard 36,000 miles it only has 127hp, and only 114 torque, we don't get 16'' alloy rims, we don't get 4 wheel disc brakes we don't get dual exhaust, we don't get a car alarm, and we don't get fog lights.

I'm not saying the 2002 Civic EX Coupe is crap, it's a great car and all, but this new 2003 Hyundai Tiburon @ only $18,669.20 is a great value, with a great warranty, and with better options. You can even get the Tiburon with a V6 and it will still cost under $20 grand.

So what do you guys think? I have read some reviews on the Tiburon and they were quite good, I've also test drove the neon, sunfire, caviler, focus, and the Civic. They all sucked A** except for the Civic. Now I'm stuck between the new 2003 Hyundai Tiburon or the 2002 Hond Civic EX for my new car. Which one is better than the other? Let me know your opinons guys, thanx.

Here is a link to read up on the tiburon. http://www.hyundaiusa.com/

YOu are probably going to see the same lack (if not more) of aftermarket support for that car, but it's your money. Who knows what'll happen.

edit: Looks like I was wrong about the aftermarket support This site has stuff for them. They got just about everything for those cars as we do with ours! I would of never expected that. Sorry.

- your making your decision harder than its supposed to be: choose honda. reliability
- there's a reason why the warranties are different: honda's more reliable.
- 140hp and 133 torque isnt a big difference
- who would want a dual exhaust on a civic anyway: its more harmful for our little 1.7L engine
- what about mpg? do u care about this.
- the tiburon are just ugly from a style point of view
- if you're worried about the price, don't buy till those clearance sales when honda car prices usually go down $2000.
- i bought mine for 16,600 and that was for the ex.
- if u want a little speed, buy an rsx.

Dude,
1. check Consumer Reports on the Civic and Tiburon.
2. Check the weight of the Tiburon. It most likely weighs over 3000 lbs. That 144hp/133tq won't really matter because of weight.
3. Hyundi is putting all that stuff on there because everyone knows that their cars suck.

peace

DragonReborn1018 = hyundai.com salesman?

quit selling hyndai on a civic forum.

hyundai tiberon might be better performance off the lot, but its their sportycar. are car is equal to a hyundai accent.

in addition the demand for hyundai performance parts isn't as powerful. a year or so from now the supply on 7 gen civic parts will be more comparble to the 6 gen . we have a new body and powertrain that needs parts to be enginered. give it time they will make honda parts, and the civic can push 200 hp w/o nitro again .

hyundai = $hitty cars hiding behind a shady warrenty..

get a hyundai and i'll race you in my civic as soon as i can get my hands on a supercharger

You're gonna use the hell out of that warranty! I know a few people with tiburons. They are nothing but trouble. Pretty major engine problems.
Bad choice for a car.

If you're looking for objective unbiased opinions on the Civic and the Tiburon, you've come to the wrong place, as you can see from the above responses.

IMO, the Honda EX is slightly over-priced for what you get (no fogs, no alloys, no rear discs), but Hondas are usually like that... you really pay for the Honda name and reputation. I'm a Honda-lover, so I didn't mind paying a bit more for my car. I've never been too crazy about Hyundais and their quality and styling, but they do seem to be improving. And btw, that 10 year Hyundai warranty is NOT bumper to bumper.

It really depends on what you're looking for. I'm not too crazy about the looks of the Tib... I find it's a bit too loud, and it will definitely use up more gas than the Civic... something to consider now that gas prices are going up again. And quality and reliability has always been a question mark with Hyundai, and a brand new model like this Tib. But then again, the Tib does have lots of other pluses going for it, like the ones you listed.

If you don't mind the Hyundai name, the lower gas mileage, and the questionable looks (imo), I say go for the Tiburon. If you do mind, then go with the Civic.

Oh, and don't forget that the Civic is THE SAFEST car in it's class.

i may be wrong...but i dont think i am....

you said you can even get the new tibby in a v6 and still be under $20 grand...but dual exhaust and almost every other option you described only comes on the V6....you make it sound like they all come on the 4 cylinder model...when in fact they dont!

so you do get more options....but you also pay more for them (compared to the ex)

oh..and i dont know where your shopping but you can get an ex for much less than that...i think your dealer is bending you over!!!!!!!

Hey if your deciding to get the 2.0 i-4 2003 tiburon it should be the same engine as older 2.0 beta motors...which means you can use RIMMER SUPERCHARGER which is already out ...gives you 200hp & 180ft-lbs at the crank! with 7psi intercooled!!!!!!!! yea so go for it ...and be different.....http://www.rimmersuperchargers.com/tiburon.html

First off I'm not a dealer like somone said I was, I'm a 19, I'm a college student. And yes the the 2.0L does come with dual exhaust, and I was just asking. A lot of people say Hyundai's are sh** and I've heard a lot of crap about them. My choice is still on the 2002 Civic EX coupe, I just wanted to know your guy's opinion's, thats all. The car could be a piece of sh** and it most likely is, I have not test drove the
2003 Hyundai Tiburon yet, and I might, the 2002, 2001 and even the 2000 models of tiburon were all kinda sh**y. And yes the Civi'c do get better gas mileage, and Honda is a better car company, so my choice is still the 2002 Civic EX, I just wanted to know what you guys thought of the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon. I'll take your advice and stick with the Civic like I planned from the beginning. Thanx!

Since you haven't driven it yet, take the new Tiburon out for a test drive, then make your final decision. That way, you won't have any regrets later, on whichever car you choose.

werd.

take a test drive man. I think the new tiburon is a long way from what hyundai was going.. they're making better and better cars... there's like so many threads on the new tiburon, so obviously it caught some attention.

the pros are there. they're cheaper. no doubt about it. comes more loaded. value is definitely there.

quesitonable things about hyundai is as stated, their reputation on quality is.. well. quesitonable.

but hey, its not like Honda is perfect quality too.. just look at our Vehicle Issue forum...

still, if I'm gonna get one.. I'll shoot for the v6 model. and IMO, the car looks better than a civic.

anyway, test drive. after u get a feel for the car.. you'll have to consider other factors u can't test right away... like how long it'll last.

thats kinda why hyundai/kia threw out the 10 year warranty... they want to get rid of their rep of cars that break down... they want to say they're confident about their products... ask around for direction personal opinion to those who own the cars.. not someone going "my cousin's best friend has a hyundai.." etc. espeically if its a 89 hyundai or something. ya know?

and hey, MSRP is 18 grand for the v6. awfully tempting eh? well. maybe to me anyway.

you get what you pay for

hyundai uses the same v6 from the Santa Fe in the new tiburon. That particular v6 is having problems with the engine seizing at freeway speeds. also, some of the warranty replacements have seized as well.

Hyundai is well known for terrible fit and finish, and for giving a huge warranty then fighting every little claim.

Remember, you can buy a rolex on the street for $10 with a lifetime guarantee......

From a 2003 Tiberon Owner's own comments:

I had no intention of buying a Hyundai, much less a "sports car". I am 45 years old, 5'11 and figured I needed a luxury car. Under duress from my fiance', I promised to check out a Sonata (not a bad car, but not what I wanted). While there, I spotted the black version of the new Tiburon with the 17" wheels and tall spoiler. I thought it was Celica or something! Very shocked to find out it was a Hyundai.
Took this car for a drive (had to!) and was VERY impressed with the power, handling, fit and finish and the value. It's not a TT or a Z3, but for my budget, it's a great find. Seats are typical roadster..low and firm, but very well contoured. Ride is tight and not sloppy at all. I had a Corvette and a Lexus checking me out during the test drive. don't think they knew what it was, but I was happy to get those driver's interest up.
Anyway, I bought the auto with the tipper option, V6 (185HP w/ nice torque), leather seats, 16" alloy wheels with the B class spoiler. Still get lots of second and third drive bys and most everyone is impressed with the car. Of course there's the usual, "Ya bought a Hyundai, huh?" comments, but I think the car's a bargain compared to the Japanese cars.
Time will tell, but for now I love the car and my fiance' is afraid to drive it (maybe a good thing?)

Strengths:
Looks, power and low end torque, included goodies, decent cargo space w/ the 50/50 split fold down rear seat and hatchback, overall fit and finish very close to perfect.

Weaknesses:
ABS and traction control are options, inside lighting is limited, steering is quick but a bit numb, the rear woofer is not what my daughter expected (no window rattling), rear seating is for kids or small people only

******

That said, i'd go for the tiburon if those are your choices. Go for something different. Civics although great quality cars, if you want some excitement, something different, a lil more show and more heads turning your way, choose hyundai. Maybe you'll be dissappointed, maybe you'll be pleased with more than you bargained for but that's the way it is for all new cars you get. My hands are still down for the SI trade up when it's availabe here in Canada.

Hmmmmm...I looked into the 2k3 Tibby...Personally, I think they are pretty cool looking...They are still kind of a love it or hate it design, but since I like it, no harm done there. Anyway, I think they are fun to drive and all, but I still think that the Honda is the better overall package. The Honda was also cheaper and will hold more of it's value in the long run. I don't know why the ex costs so much up by you...mine cost me $16,250 with a spoiler, floor mats, and sunroof wind visor (yeah, yeah...). This was before tax, mind you, but still...I debated for a while which car I should buy, but I ended up going with the civic and I have no regrets. I have a friend who bought the tibby, though, and he likes it just fine. All in what YOU decide, ultimately...
