Well, theres carfax.com. I believe if you enter a VIN number it will tell you if there are any hits on file so you know if it's worth purchasing the report or not.

Carfax sucks! A friend of mine signed up for carfax when she was getting a car so she could check vin #'s and we looked my truck up on it. Well, I had a new door on it from getting hit, whole driver's side bed was hit, and I could tell when I bought it that the whole drivers side was brand new cause the caulk and sealant was sloppy. Carfax did not bring up a thing on it.

If it doesn't get a hit when there actually was work done, then it means that the person that did the work didn't report it...

my dads green 94 dodge shadow has a yellow trunk lid from an 89 shadow on it, but that wont be on carfax because i put it on there (from my girlfriends dead shadow) after my dads shadow got hit in a wawa parking lot by some kind of work truck most likely and the f*cker didnt leave a note. the car was dented up high on the side near the back, and the windshield was shattered (and since the window is part of the trunk lid, it was cheaper to just change the lid for now and get new glass for the original trunk lid some other time)

ricerocket, you have to pay to get the real info, they will just tell you how much info there is for free. well worth it if you want to buy a used car, my dad wouldnt have that shadow if he listened to me and checked it since its a reconditioned vehicle and he didnt know that until after he bought it for 3500 and was offered 800 trade in for it

The VIN should appear on the registration documents, and on a small plate in the lower left-hand area of the windshield. On our cars, it should start with something like 1HG I believe.

It's also located on the lower corner ( in front of the driver steering) behind the windshield.
