whats wrong with a mustang, people are ****ing gay now man, take a minute to realize where performance modifications came from, the 19-****ing-30s, with cars that produced real power, a.k.a street rods/muscle cars, containing v-8s. Performance wasn't originally derived from economickly friendly civics, theres a reason a mustang can outperm a civic in eevry aspect, so i just don't see why ppl disrespect heritage. The mustang is probably one of the msot historic cars ever. So don't hate just cause it is actually fast.

maybe cause its all meatheads who think they are the **** when they drive a mustang and want to race everyone on the damn road. Mustang out perform a civic in every aspect? sorry your wrong on that one.

wrong decade also, not 19-****ing-30s, try the 50s and 60s, the mid-late 40s at the earliest. Also mustangs don't outperform in every aspect, though that is the common mentality between the owners of those cars. People don't hate the mustang or any other "fast" car just because it's actually fast, they hate or dis-like them because of owners, cheap parts, endless service and breakdowns, etc. there's a reason these cars are all over the place and it's because they are super cheap compared to other cars in it's class. That didn't use to be the case though did it, American cars use to be the most sought after vehicle but that all changed in the 70s and 80s when import quality started going way up and the only way American companies thought of getting sales back by was using cheaper parts instead of oh i don't know, making a more quality vehicle.

on topic, I would go with a 300zx twin turbo or 240sx because they are cheap, fast, rear wheel drive, and parts are everywhere. I had a 94 300zx tt for about 6 months and that thing hauled, too bad my brother had to wreck it.

I am not a fan of Americans cars at all....each person in my family that can drive (4) drive a Honda..........we don’t race or anything so they are great for us.........American cars have been pretty crummy….....bad gas mileage......noisy interior and so on..........but with the technology and competition with imports, American cars are becoming just as qualified as imports........just my opinion.......but..............................I will never drive one. “Those who hate American cars will get in a domestic and instantly hear something wrong……and really there is nothing to be fixed……those who drive imports and love them hear nothing when something is really wrong”

o yea find a decent conditioned 240 and fix it up !!!

Used SRT4 or Z28 camaro.

I don't care for the recommendation of...

1) buy a car
2) swap engines, trans etc..

It's never as simple as it sounds & it will always cost more than you think. If you were a great enough mechanic to build a highly reliable swap car yourself, you wouldn't be asking the question in the first place. I assume you just want to go for somthing ready to play the way you buy it. With that being the case, Z28 or SRT4 would probably be my top picks. Both are very common, easily made faster (without spending extreme cash) both have lots of support, experienced tuners and parts available.

DSMs aren't exactly known for their reliability. A mid 90s vette isn't too bad but I still say a 98-01 f-body (camaro or trans am) is a good choice. Like A03 said a srt-4 wouldn't be a bad pick either.

Use the $12,000 as a down payment on something new, so it can have reliability. Buy a WRX.

this might be liitle off topic , but how about a bike ( maybe a honda cbr 1000 or 600.)

dsm can be reliable you just have to keep up with everything and build it up for future needs. (like most people forget to do.)

lol wow where did you obtain this info from, a cereal box? 1930 V8s, flatheads didnt put out more than 100hp. 25 years later is when most of the power was made. its mustang owners that people hate on, and the ugly styling of the newer models

as far as a cheap car, fast car. i would say go with a 240. you can pick one up for around 3k in okay shape and then swap or boost it and be pretty fast.

actaully it was the 1930s, they chopped and channeled ford vickys and similar chevrolet models, and yes a mustang does outperform a civic in every aspect, and will always do so. I'm not hating on the civic, but look at the facts, civc=economy car, mustang=renowned performance car. and rwd>fwd.

i wanna see a mustang out proform a civic in auto x. and its not the 1930s, its the late 50s. they just used cars from the 30s. get your facts straight, my dad was born in 36, he was one of the people who did the whole "hot rod" thing in the 50s. so dont come in here thinking you know everything when you dont. i love the mustang only the fox body (87-93 for you people who dont know) but it does not out proform the civic in every aspect, yes its faster, but it cant handel for ****, and guess what its not as reliable, so thats 2 out of 3 aspects that the mustang does not out proform the civic.

but on topic now. i say get a 96-00 Z28, has your corvette engine LS1 or LS6 depending on the year, LS6 after 98 i believe. 6 speed. RWD raw power. and jackson racing makes a mean SC for it. can get it up to 400hp pretty easily.
