Is there such a thing as SOHC VTEC?
My friend just bought a Canadian Acura 1.7 EL and it's listed as a SOHC VTEC. Is this possible? Do these exist? I thought all VTEC were DOHC.

Nope. all 7th gen civics, and everything else with the D17 engine is sohc, even the vtec models in the ex civics, acuras, etc.
see here.
edit: the k20 is dohc, and vtec, but dohc is not required for vtec.

I don't know that much about acuras, but i do know they don't use the same trim level designations at hondas(ie. dx, lx, hx, ex), so that won't be any help. The D17s with vtec in civics say it on the plastic cover on top of the valve cover. My DX just says honda, whereas the ex's with vtec say honda, with vtec underneath. I guess just look at the engine. I'm sure there is a vtec controller somewhere, though i don't know what it would look like, unless it's just in the ecu. There should also be extra wires running into the head for the vtec solenoid. I guess just look around this site for pictures of an ex with a D17 vtec. Tho I'm sure other's are reading this thread that would be much better equipped to answer this question. Anyone else wanna contribute??

Hmmm......he's picking it up tomorrow or the nexxt day, just wondering for right now since he's getting pretty excited. He was just standing behind me asking about this site, maybe I'll get him to sign up.
from what I remember reading in the EL subforum on this site, the Acura EL has the same d17a2 that the Civic EX has. The EL is basically a luxury-class civic ex. read up in the EL subforum for a lot more info, I believe there was a sticky at the top.
Also, the 7thgen EX and HX have vtec, though no where near the same as the DOHC vtec. ours is vtec-e, the EX having a little more perfomance, and the HX having a lean-burn vtec-e for better gas mileage.

Serious
Seriously? This is a serious post? Man, I did so much research on D17s before I bought my Civic. yes an EL will have a vtec D17, yes vtec is available on SOHC, although it is only on the intake valves because it is single cam. The El will have the same D17 as an Si(Canada) or Ex.
When I first started reading this, I thought it was a joke.
