under general ramblings, go to 1/4 mile times--cont'd (it's my thread originally) and go to pg. 4. all the input was great from everybody, especially look at the tips Hwoody gave me, he was really helpful. Neo says he starts in vtec before takeoff but judging from your handle that's not applicable but get a feel for it, rev up to 3500 or 4000 rpm. You can balance the gas and clutch like Neo said but just dumping the clutch works very well also, if like me you still have the firestones on all 4 corners at takeoff it may take anywhere from 1-2 s before they make full contact and practice shifting quickly, that's what I'm constantly doing--->chirp, especially from 2nd to 3rd cuz that one is difficult
good luck

I have the LX (non-VTEC) so I launch at about 3000rpms. With the wheels and the 2 1/2" drop it hooks up quick. From there, I power shift if the competition is stiff. If not, I'll slap shift as fast as I can right before redline. If it's quarter mile and I need to catch up a hair, or just need to pull a fender-length or something I'll push the clutch to the floor and pop it again in third (double-clutch). However, our cars are weak at the top end of third so you've got to time this right and do it around 5000rpms for it to be effective.

Don't double clutch, it doesnt do any good. Double clutching belongs in the same myth bracket as "cars without ABS stop faster on dry pavement than cars with ABS".

Double clutching if for rally racing an you only use it when your downshifting...What I do is i drop the clutch at around 4000 and shift just before every red line. I killed a focus like that and a tiburon so that's what works for me. The only thing is my front tires are really worn.

Hwoody77 can only hope to improve
If you drop the clutch, you'll just keep spinning...feather it out.

I find that instead of squelling your wheels by droping your clutch at 4000 at the start line (traffic light) you have to find that sweet spot between 1400 and 2400 to drop the clutch. This way you don't squal but your car gives a good jump forward. As soon as this happens floor it till red-line approaches. Slap it hard into 2nd with like this:

1) foot off gass, clutch in, jam into seccond (all actions at the same time)

- As soon and both the clutch is in and 2nd is jammed in place:

2) foot off clutch and floor it

You should hear a squeal when you do this from 1st to seccond only. Maybe a softer squeel in 2nd to 3rd.

When you redline at 3rd slow down before the cop gets you.
The race should be over and you can try to calculate how many car-lengths you lost by.

I havent ever took off by reving up first to 4000 and then popping the clutch. WOuldn't that bend your valve springs or will it hurt your drive axels???? I'm very curious.

If your car is stock, your axles should be fine. Do not feather the clutch as HWoody says. That burns up the clutch, and it's a technique called slipping. Very bad, and you'll find yourself replacing the clutch very quickly.

Hwoody, how did you get a 15.8 without dropping and using the "feather" method. The feather method will NOT get you off the line quicker than dropping.... so how did you get that 15.8???

- i race in two ways: 1. rev up to 4000-5000, let go of clutch and floor it, tires usually peel out, therefore i quickly shift into 2nd, getting a pretty good launch.
2. 2nd way, rev up only to at least 2000 then floor it, never peels out.
