hours of labor on ball joints for dodge

Hey guys, I went to get all 4 new tires for my 1999 dodge dakota 6 cylinder. The mechanic told me i need to get my upper and lower ball joints replaced. He wanted $950 for the parts and labor! does that sound like alot? I was thinking of buying them from an autoparts store, they're like 30$ each there. And then i was gonna go check around and see how much they would charge for labor. anyone know how much they might charge for labor in detroit michigan? or any suggestions on what to do with my car? thanks, simon

^^ well being a service tech at a ford dealership.......that price sounds about right if your getting it done at a dealership. because they charge(well at my dealership) aboiut 7 hours of labor with the diag time for ball joints(the front ones of course) and our labor rate is $160 an hour

^^ haha yea its over here in norcal....walnut creek, and trust me it is. we are also nbext to a maserati, ferrari, aston martin, bmw, mercedes, land rover dealerships.

and the funny thing is we get at least 30 appointments and at most 100 appointments a day. so yea there are people who are willing to pay for customer pay (non warrenty) repair orders here in walnut creek.

I work for N.A.P.A. in Spokane. Here, I know a lot of shops won't install customer purchased parts, mainly because they don't make money off of them that way. If you do bring your own you get no warranty and charged way more in labor.
