100% not bad for an old guy.
The verbiage for the flat is to get out of the driving lanes. If you're on a 2 lane road, then you would pull off the pavement. To avoid your jack sinking into the dirt, you should carry a 2x4 to help support the jack (old man's advice). Of course, your jack sinking into the dirt will always be better than your car getting slammed in the rear.
