well you answered your own question.
the obvious civic. and if you need proof, check out F&F
but seriously, i think the civic because it was a car that everyone could afford. simple as that.

I watched a story on this on Sports Car Revolution. It was in the mid 80's. A car called the Dodge Omni. It was a turbo 4-cyl hatchback that people modded the hell out of for insane power and handling.
I would love to vote DSM since I own one, but from what people were doing with the Omni years before DSM, I gotta give it to the Omni

if you're talking about domestics then tuning has been going on for a loooooooong time. my dad had two camaros during the 70's with around 400hp. he said his friends had faster cars than he did because they would fix them up. so yeah it's been going on for awhile.

I think Boris was referring to compact cars with 4 Cylinder engines. Otherwise you could go back to the 60's when Shelby was tuning Fords, probably even further

the mod bug hit the US in the early 90s which=early 90's imports that would be the...
EF/EG Hatches (88-95 Civics)
CB7s (90-93 Accords)
1g DSM's
and those with money had the big 3 beasts (Rx-7, Supra or 300ZX)

The DSM was so great when it first came out, since the turbo and turbo AWD cars could easily get away from cops! haha that just made cops fast though

Philiophically, I think the first tuner car was the second car ever made.
Someone should be smart enough to figure out what that means...
More realistically... its gotta be something like a 32 Ford or some other rat rod like that.
No way it took all the way until the 90's to kick off a "tuner" first, its just constant evolution.

Since this is supposed to be talking more about import car tuning:
GTi's and DSM's started a huge pre-FATF import tuning wave in this counrty. That is for sure.
The GTi is the original pocket rocket.
Sure the civic is cheap and some have fast ones, but I don't think the civic is the one that got the ball rolling. The civic has become an icon, but not for starting the tuning revolution.
