Hand on the shifter...

How many people drive with their hands on the shifter? I do it, and I drive an automatic

Depends on what I'm doing. If I'm racing, one on the wheel, one on the shifter. If I'm racing through curves and driving the car to it's limits, two hands on the bottom of the wheel so I can shuffle steer. If I'm pimpin' down a stretch of road, one hand on top or on the side, other on the shifter. Being an experienced racer, I tend to put my hands on the bottom of the wheel for better control when I hit a curve or turn a corner just out of habbit.

I always drive with one hand on the shifter. I feel weird if it's not there. (I think thats partly due to the fact that I drive a 5 speed.) Anytime you see me driving, it's one hand on the wheel (usually on the top) and the other on the shifter. Its just what's comfortable for me

I drive one hand on wheel and one hand on auto shifter!!! It's a bad habit. I've got it to neutral on accident on the freeway before.
If someone would kindly buy me a arm rest, I 'd be more comfortable...

It's fun keeping one hand on the shifter... it's nice doing that on an auto. SOMETIMES (like today) I was driving with both hands... what a rare feat. I like to have two hands on the steering wheel some times but most times it just

One hand for the wheel.
One hand for the shifter.

EDIT: I drive a manual BTW... not an auto. And if there's no shifter/center console, then I just drive with two hands... cuz I do drive a car like that, and the power steering on the car is WAY too loose for you to drive with one hand over certain conditions.

i usually have one hand on the shifter (i have a 5-speed) and the other hand steering on the bottom part of the steering wheel. but if i have both hands on the wheel, they're both towards the top of the wheel... you know what i do a lot though that's bad, is set it in cruise control and steer with my knee and do other stuff with my hands like shuffle around my car for something, or write something, or tie my shoes if i ran out of the house in a hurry (which is about 3 times a day).....god it's amazing i'm not dead with a smashed up civic

ya i do it all the time. I think it is like a natural reaction for the need for speed type thing. I guess u fell like u have to shift the **** even though u drive an automatic. I do it all the time and when im at lights i will sit there and put it in neutral and in drive and in d3 and i dont even know why.

umm...usually right hand on the wheel and left hand resting on the window sill. no need for the hand to be on the shifter on the automatic. that would just make me want a manual even more. hehe.

I usually rest my hand on the shifter when I use it a lot (city driving). On the highway I just kinda rest my fingers on the steering wheel.

Grey, I'm right there with ya...Resting the hand on the shifter...even when I drive an auto feels more normal...

Even before I had my civ I did that...I remember people would always be like "dood, you don't own a manny!"

Guess I had always wanted the manual!!!

I always keep one hand on the shifter. My CVT shifter lets me go from "D" (drive) to "S" (sport, or second) which brings my RPM's up quickly so that I can accelerate quicker. So when I'm ready to pass somebody I throw it into "S" and away I go!

SAME HERE. My hand is on the shifter 99% of the time simply because most of my driving is City driving...and because when I am on the highway, there's usually ttraffic anyway!
