...at a local dirt track near my house. They just released info on a new 4 cyl stock class that will be started up this year. I need help finding a car that...
no factory turbo/sc
FWD
max engine size of 2.0
2 doors
motor has to be stock and in the car it came with
around $2k or less (cause its gonna get all chopped up and the **** beat out of it...why spend a lot? )
ive thought about honda/acura, but what else is out there that meets these requirements?

Another option if the plan isnt to be doing a lot of after market engine mods, is to think about an old saturn SC2 or SL2, relatively light, about 2400 lbs, and comes with 124 hp and 122 torque. Also these cars are relatively easy to gut with the external plastic planels that come off with screws and cheap interiors. You can pick up old ones for cheap and they are very plentiful thats the main advantage. Also no body rust because of plastic. Big problem is aftermarket blows, and youll probably have to replace piston rings and head gasket they have major problems there. Just cheap to the point of a throw away car you can pick up a running one under 1000 easy from early to mid 90s.

one car that many people overlook is any of the mazda BG chassis vehicles.
this includes the 90-94 mazda protege, the 90-96 ford escort GT (its really a mazda), and the 94-97 kia sephia 1.8L.
the 90-94 protege lx and the EGT have a 1.8L DOHC mazda motor, with an iron block, that was built for boost. the 323 gtx and gtr had the BP-ZET turbo motor, which was the same thing as the 1.8L DOHC n/a motor, just turbocharged and paired with an AWD drivetrain.
I just picked up a 92 protege DX (the shitty single cam motor), for $150, and just got a BP-ZE (the 1.8L DOHC) for $125 with 79k miles on it. These motors easily last 300k miles, and make good power.
In n/a trim, they are rated at 127hp/115 lb-ft of torque from the factory. if you want to boost it, most people run 17lbs on a stock block. It can handle this much boost because of the iron block, and also because of the main bearing support plate, and a few other things that this motor has.
Since you want a two door, the escort gt is the way to go. sure, they don't look too great, and say ford on them, but they are really a mazda underneath. the stock suspension is very substantial.
For example on cost, my friend mike got his EGT for $400 dollars with some body damage (fenders, hood, bumper), and put another 400 in to fix the body damage, and his car only has 93k miles on it. its all stock, besides the azenis on stock wheels, and easily outhandles my old 7thgen (see profile for mods). Also, my friend john bought a 93 protege LX from the original owner for $1000 with 185k miles on it. it now has about 199k miles on it (original motor), and runs perfectly, which is amazing for any car to do, because of the way he drives it.
This motor was also used in the NA-chassis miatas. the reason for it being so cheap is because many people overlooked the mazda proteges/ford escort GTs, and they weren't popularized like early 90s hondas were. these cars are extremely cheap compared to any honda. you should seriously look into them.

You have to consider a 1990 Honda Prelude Si!!! It's a 2.0 and it hauls. I had one a while back and the timing belt went on it, so I rebuilt the engine, then it ulitmately blew a rod. So, I sold it to this guy for 200 bucks and he put another '90 si engine in and tore the thing apart to make it a racer....it was nasty that car mooooved. Nobody I knew then could come close to keeping up with that car.
whats the quickest way around dirt oval track? if its kickin out the rear end.
4cylinder foxbody's own you! although i think it might have been a 2.3l, but im not sure so i figured id post.
oh yeah, toyota ae86
just some old small light cars, in a race like taht you dont need tons of power, just good suspension and skilz

I would get a 1st gen eclipse/talon/lazer NA (all NA ones are FWD only)
they are cheap and easy to find and take a beating with good power.

dsm's ^^ SUCK!
i know plenty of ppl with them and they have never ending problems. and if you cant mod this car than its not worth it, especially if you cant go turbo. thats all dsm's are good for, that and breaking.

yeah all those 250,000+ mile NA dsms I see are REALLY good at breaking.
Last one I drove, a 1st gen laser, ran excellent with 240,000 miles.

then your lucky. hey im not speaking from owners experience, just mechanics. they are great daily drivers but when you get beating on them parts fail left and right easily. i know at least a dozen people in my area all with diff generation dsm's and models and all have theyre cars constanly being repaired. however the NA is of course more reliable cus its not as oftenly pushed to its limits.
Try to score an older Sentra with the NA version of the SR20 in it, you can tune those and get some decent results if you need to

Also you can destroke the 4g63 if you want to spend money on it and have it running up to over 10,000rpm safely.
I have yet to experience a DMS with a lot of problems. Any of them, and the one has been beaten more than demolition derby cars I think, are running well after tons of miles and beating
