I live in michigan and of course our roads are horrible. i was wondering if i got 17's would i risk rim damage and if so would i just be better off going withs some 16's?

you just answered your own question. 17s and up are not bumpy road friendly

I went with 205/55-16's to be on the safe side. No regrets !!

17's are no problem with bumpy roads...

get lightweight forged rims such as Volk TE37, 5Zigen Becketts, couple them with 215/45/17 and you should be fine...

...actually with those rims mentioned above, you should experience improvement in ride quality (less harsh vibration translated to cabin)
