long duration car storage
well the day is here, im deploying for iraq in a few days and i need to store my vehicle.
Conditions of storage area:
usually dry once in a while theres rain its in SOCAL
it will be parked on concrete under a car port
I ordered a nice car cover for it but i was wondering if theres any sort of work i should do and so forth before it starts to sit. it will be sitting for 6 months.

this is what everyone usually says, although i have no idea myself.
remove all fluids
take car off wheels if you can, since tires can flatspot after a few months
cover it
some other people will finish off the list

depends on if the military is storing it for you or you are storing it at your cost. from my experience make sure fluids , gas are topped off and a cover for the car unless being placed in a garage of some sort. THe topped off fuel will keep water from building in the tank when you park the car remove the negative and positive battery terminal.
I worked at a car storage place over the summer and we had a few ppl storing there cars while they were in Iraq. They didn't do anything to there cars, but some people ask to remove the battery connection and for some we go and let them run until they come up to temperature every month. I don't know if you want to keep it at your house or if you want to take it somewhere but I think my work charged $50 a month in a secure building with a nice alarm.

remove battery, put the whole car on jackstands, fluids gas/oil/antifreeze need to be changed before driving, there are other precautions but i'm hoping the more knowledgable members will come in with that info.

if he can give it a good drive every couple weeks would be best and then you wouldn't have to do anything. and i mean really driving it around for 30mins and getting on the freeway to get everything warmed up.
i put my car away every winter and when i go to store it i fill the gas up pump the tires to 44 psi just to they wont get flat spots on them since there's that extra bit of air in the tires, put pieces of plywood under the wheels to get it off the floor. i was told not to use jack stands and then just disconnect the battery and have it started once a month until it comes up to temp then go from there.

Re: long duration car storage
I live in Canada where the snow is at astronomically more than socal(lucky bastards) I'm planning on throwing mine in an indoor heated storage facility, for about 35 bucks a month!! I'm just going to jack it up, remove battery, top off fluids, cover exhaust and other openings, keep wipers in upright position and keep the windows down a eighth of an inch.
I leave for training on the 4th, but Canada's got your back bro!

I would not use a car cover, I used one once and it did more harm than good. Dirt and debris gets under it and then it rubs on the finish. I wouldn't worry too much if your dad is gonna drive it from time to time for you, should be fine. Good luck over there, throw some shoes at em for us.

Re: long duration car storage
if its sitting for a while, make sure you put lubecontrol products in the oil and gas to act as a stabilizer, otherwise you will have a mess later. jacked up, you should be fine storing the car all winter with the battery unplugged. when summer comes, reconnect it and its ready to drive after an oil change.
Re: long duration car storage
You can use jack stands, fuel stabilizer, unhook battery, change fluids, don't top off because the crap in the gas will sink to bottom of tank and ruin your pump or filter or both. I use Seafoam if it will be longer than 6mos. There are Youtube vids for it and I've personally used it and it works great. I had a 91 Integra sit for three years without anything done to it and used Seafoam, changed oil, fuel filter and BAM turned right on and is still running as I type. My Grandma is driving it believe it or not but, thats another story. I tried putting it back to stock but, she wanted me to leave the air-intake and exhaust because she likes the way it sounds and "moves" haha. The car was left at 160000 miles and is at like 200+ now.
