ill check under his hood tomarrow after school...but i think its a 4cyl, b/c the v6 has a lil V6 chrome piece on the back....kinda like our ex or lx...yunno...lata
Yes, there is a 4 cyl 'Zetec' engine available in 99-02 Cougars. There's not very many of them, but Ford did produce them.
At only 125 hp, they're not exactly crotch rockets. Course they're not supposed to be. It was for people wanting that good fuel economy
There are two tale-tell external differences. I-4s only have the small rounded exhaust, while V-6s have a larger peice around it. Also I-4s come with the smaller 15" 5 'spoke' rims.
The good thing about the 'Zetec' is the aftermarket possibilties for it, since its the same motor as the Zetec Focus. There is now a turbo kit which will boost it up to 348 hp and 376 ft/lbs of torq.
Frankly, I'm surprised the Cougar driver was able to keep up with you if he was just an I-4. They are slow. Run 0-60s at about 8.5-9 seconds. So if he was able to keep up with you, he was doing a great job.
Now my 00 V-6 runs 0-60 at about 7-7.2, and thats with the dog slow ATX tranny. MTXs will be about 6.7-7 seconds.
The V6 also has very good low end torque starting at about 2.5k on the revs, so its nothing for me to take someone at the line at the drag strip though the challenge is staying ahead once they hit their power.
And at the autocross, the Cougar shines. I was 2nd in points last season in class, didn't have a chance at first cause I didn't get to make it to every event though.
