Interesting review on the ACURA CSX !!! HEY The Engine Is a K20Z2 Not a K20A3!!!
Acura CSX available only in Canada;
what a pity for everyone else!
JIM ROBINSON
Canadians, as a whole, are more inclined towards smaller cars than our American cousins; but like them, we are moving ever upmarket in terms of our luxury leanings.
To meet this seeming incongruity, Acura has launched the 2006 CSX, a compact car with the look and feel of luxury.
The CSX, as far as I know, is the only car made in Canada, by Canadians, just for Canadians.
As opposed to some cars built in other countries and sold here like the smart car, the CSX is built solely in Honda's production facility in Alliston. The two plants there represent a total investment of approximately $2 billion. It also sources more than $2 billion annually in goods from Canadian suppliers as part of its commitment to be a company powered by Canadians for Canadians.
With 4,300 workers at its two plants, they produce the Honda Pilot, Ridgeline and Civic coupe and sedan, and the Acura MDX.
It seems like going to a lot of trouble to build a car for a very small market base like Canada, but it works for Acura. The CSX is not the first Canuck-only Acura. The Acura 1.6 EL (then 1.7 EL) bowed a decade ago and has always proved a dependable seller in our market.
The CSX fills in the entry-level slot for a five-car, one SUV Acura model lineup that includes the TSX, RSX, TL, MDX SUV, and the range-topping RL.
Mechanically, the CSX shares much, like the platform, with the Honda Civic sedan also built in Alliston.
The most visible similarity is the bi-level instrument panel. A digital speedometer, fuel gauge and temperature gauge are housed in the upper level to be more in-line with the driver's line-of-sight. The lower level of the instrument panel houses a tachometer, multi-information digital display, odometer with trip meter and a variety of warning indicators.
But there are significant differences from the Civic as well.
Where the Civic sedan has a single overhead cam 140 hp, 1.8-litre engine, the CSX has a dual overhead cam 2.0-litre, derived from the Acura RSX performance coupe, producing 155 hp. The five-speed manual or optional five-speed electronic automatic transmissions, are essentially the same as the Civic.
In terms of fuel consumption, the five-speed automatic is listed at 9.5/6.5L/100 km city/highway. The five-speed manual gets 8.7/6.4L/100 km city/highway.
The styling is a departure from the Civic but the Honda "look" is definitely there. The CSX has an interesting front fender treatment in the form of a looping arch up and over the front wheel that is carried through to the rear. It is rather elegant.
There are two trim levels, the Touring and the Premium. The Touring model has four-wheel disc brakes, automatic climate control, premium cloth upholstery, six standard air bags, drive-by-wire throttle system for more responsive driving, and a six-speaker high-powered audio system that features MP3/WMA compatibility. The Premium factors in leather-trimmed interior with heated front seats, a power moonroof with tilt and sliding shade, high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps, and a 350-watt audio system with six-CD changer.
Additionally, the Acura Navigation System with Bilingual Voice Recognition is optional on the Premium model. The navigation system also includes illuminated steering wheel-mounted controls and a digital audio card reader to store and play back digital audio files.
Pricing for the CSX Touring five-speed manual/five-speed automatic is $25,400/$26,700. The Premium is $28,100/$29,400 and the Premium Navi is $30,600/$31,900.
The CSX, like the Civic, shares a Honda safety-oriented engineering concept called ACE that stands for Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure. It reroutes frontal energy in a crash through a network of load bearing structures in the front of the vehicle.
Acura's safety concerns also extend to pedestrians. To help reduce pedestrian injuries, the CSX's hood and fender areas are designed to deform if contacted by the head of an adult or child. Energy-absorbing collapsible hood supports, wiper arms and fender mounts are designed to allow substantial deformation in an impact.
A lot of work went into the suspension, so it gives a combination of sharp handling and comfortable ride. At the front, coil springs over MacPherson struts have been engineered for improved traction and "feel" for the driver. The rear consists of a big, V-shaped lower control arm and a single upper link.
In terms of stopping power, the CSX offers four-wheel discs with four-channel ABS. The brakes are big being 15-inch ventilated rotors at front and 14-inch solids at the rear. The standard wheel is a 16-inch aluminum alloy with a 17-inch offered as a dealer installed option.
An interesting feature of the CSX is Maintenance Minder. It provides an odometer window readout of when to change oil, air filter, transmission fluid, timing belt, brake pads, and engine coolant, even spark plugs. Tire rotation times are also displayed.
In a driving rainstorm so heavy I couldn't take pictures, I drove both the manual and automatic versions in Premium Navi trim. As you would expect from Acura, the quality of the materials used belies the fact this is a compact car geared towards frugal motoring. No corners were cut anywhere and that was especially true of the interior where my co-driver commented several times on the superior grades of materials used.
The bi-level instrument panel is very effective in imparting information. The large, digital speedo readout being set just below the line of sight is better than a heads-up-display because (in my mind) there isn't a series of flickering ideograms that force you to look through them to see the road ahead.
Such are the advances in chassis/suspension engineering that the ride of the CSX is as good as the best luxury sedan on the market only a decade ago. The manual was the more fun to drive with a typically light Honda clutch and shifter. The automatic was a capable performer, but the manual felt faster.
This car has a very, very large windshield because the A-pillar was moved forward to increase the slope of the windshield to make for a swoppier roofline while increasing the cabin area at the same time. Acura uses special interlinked, flat-blade wipers designed expressly for what Acura calls its Forward-Extended Windshield. Now the rain we drove through would have been a challenge at any time, but on the CSX the blades more than did the job especially on Highway 401 passing those endless lines of spray-spewing tractor-trailers.
About the only thing I could find wrong was wind noise from (I think) the rearview mirrors.
The littlest Acura does a lot of things right like being the right size, right price and with the right amount of trim for those wanting a little more from a compact car.
Thus the CSX is an attractive alternative to those who appreciate great engineering with a touch of class.
AT A GLANCE
BODY STYLE: compact near luxury coupe.
DRIVE METHOD: front-engine, front-wheel drive.
ENGINE: 2.0-litre, DOHC inline four-cylinder engine (155 hp, 139 lb/ft)
FUEL ECONOMY: five-speed manual 8.7/6.4 L/100km city/highway; five-speed automatic, 9.5/6.5 L/100km city/highway.
PRICE: CSX Touring five-speed manual/five-speed automatic, $25,400/$26,700; Premium, $28,100/$29,400; Premium Navi is $30,600/$31,900

Cliffnotes:
CSX is alot more than a regular Civic so thats why it costs more. If it were introduced in the US it would sell like hotcakes

^^i agree.....
The US ex should've been what the csx is now. They should've offered hids as an option too in the US civics. If you can get it on a mazda3, you should be able to get it on a civic.

options like:
-HID
-leather package
-paddle shifter
The CSX in Canada seems like what the old Infinity G20 was...a near luxury compact.
I actually wanted a G20 but couldn't afford it =(
The US doesn't really have near luxury compact cars...the only close thing I can think of is the Mazda 3.
