Rep Power: 271 (It's ALIVE) 12,000 RPM + Turkey = Died Engine
I decided to go home to LA for Thanksgiving on Thursday afternoon instead of later that night. I just wanted to go home to see the parents, we don't really celebrate the holidays.
Anyways, I was watch "Lexus IS 350 Test Drive" on Speed today in the afternoon since I Tivo'ed last night. They drove the IS on Ojai, 33. Then I realized that I haven't taken my car to the track or canyons for months since I'm all about motorcyles now. The weather was perfect. So I showed, changed, packed, aired my tires, set my suspension, and set off.
Decided to take 166-33-101-10 freeway. 166 is a fast canyon with long sweepers. Just my luck, I get stuck behind a C5 corvette. Of course, he doesn't want to let me pass and we play the cat and mouse game. He pulls away on the straight, i catch him on the turns. I finally get by him when he realized that he wasn't going to out run me on the turns(100-115mph).
I kept doing what I was doing. So now I was going about 115-120 when a turn came up. I down shifted into 4th gear at about 115 mph . I forgot that this was a civic, not a 01 Honda F4i or 05 Kawi 636. The tach went all the way to 6 o'clock, so I'm guessing thats about 11-12k rpm.
The engine died. Luckily, I was able to stop right in front of a gate entrance to a mansion. I didn't hear anything rattling in the engine the whole time. There was no oil leak. So I doubt anything broke. I left the car up on the canyons, doubt it'll get jacked. If so, I got full coverage and will report it stolen. Didnt' want to get raped by the tow truck for getting a tow service on Thankgiving.
Going to figure out how and where to tow it to tomorrow. What a day. My friend picked me up, went over to his place for turkey. Rode his bike by home in the dark with a tinted visor on his helmet. So I rode 20 miles with the visor up. Yes, I felt very refreshed with all the cold air on the face at 75 mph on the way home.
Sorry mom and dad, maybe Christmas.

Rep Power: 295 whoa.... 12k on a d17 motor? You will prpbably need new valve springs, and if you're lucky that's it. Surely you floated the valves, but hopefully it didn't hit the piston, I'm not sure how much clearance Honda gives on the D17's for that. Hope all is well

your d17? You spend more on the engine than you probably spent on you car. My father law is a machinest and has a Camaro with a 350 that goes to 10,000 RPMs.... he said the work he put into that car was equvilant to $15,000 in just machine work, but cost him only material costs.

Rep Power: 312 dang, you were trying to run a corvette in your civic? wtf? at 115 in 5th would be at 5.5k rpms. you if her downshifted then i believe he would have went up to at least 9k. i would say 9. if its possible 12 seems a little too high. you at least burned your clutch. i know that much. check your headgasket, or get it checked. im gonna put my money on the valve hitting the poston. tell us how it goes, good luck.

You'll notice that going form 5th gear to 2nd gear you go from 0.757 to 1.870 (for an EX anywya). That is almost double the gearing, hence the RPM's will almost double when going from 5th gear to 2nd gear. To hit 12k RPM, he had to of missed 4th and hit 2nd gear.

Rep Power: 295 On an EX,
4th gear = 0.979
5th gear = 0.750
If we assume you are in 5th gear at 5,500 RPM's, you can find the RPM if you shift to 4th. It looks like this,
0.979_____ X
------ = -------
0.750 5,500
it's a simple linear relationship, yes it goes through a final gear, but since both go through the final gear it cancles out. So if you solve for X, you come up with 7,179 RPM. If you shifted to 4th under the same conditions and hit say 9000 RPM, then your 4gear ratio would be:
X______9,000
------ = --------
0.750 5,500
Agian solving for X you get a 4th gear of 1.227 (which is actually close to your 3rd gear).
So lets assume you have a 4th gear of 1.227, when shift at 3,000 RPMS in 4th gear to fifth, that would put you at:
1.227 3,000
------ = --------
0.750 ____ X
X=1833. So that means when you shift from 4th to 5th at 3000 RPM's you drop down to 1850 RPM's? Not in my car...
