How Strong is CF?
How Strong is CF?
This might be a noob question, so flame on if you'd like, plus the beast light is kicking in right about now, but i was wondering how strong Carbon Fiber is. Like could a hood hold a chick without bending or denting? Could the stock hood do so? I dunno, seemed like a good question at the time.

Stock hood dents if you put your hand on it.
CF cracks, it doesn't dent. If its a good one, it might hold a model size girl, don't put some fat chick on there.

The carbon fiber material "itself" is strong. but the gel/acrylic molding (don't know what the technical name for it is) is fragile.

haha a chick sat on my stock hood once, not a fat chick at all i mind you... its hella dented, i hate it... not many people notice though, it just reflects the light wrong... cf hoods are very strong but can be blemished easily
the fiber to make carbon fiber are polymers. like all polymers, they form long chains that, when heated, properly, bond with one another, forming narrow sheets. the resulting fibers are not used by themselves but are instead used to reinforce materials like epoxy resins. this result is an extremely strong but lightweight material.
One problem with carbon fiber is that if you scratch it and its gets moisture inside, it looses all integrity and will rot from the inside out. This is very common on CF bicycle frames, but isnt unheard of on cars. On bicycles the remedy is to use clear nail polish on it asap, a car can be re-clearcoated or the nail polish will work too.

lets all realize that carbon is literally the hardest substance on earth. diamonds you guys. but before diamonds become diamonds they are coal. pressurize it and mold it, man made carbon. and then they mix the carbon fibers with other **** to make the shape of the hood and to make it strong. i have seen CF hoods live through an accident while the car was totaled in a front collision

Maybe per sqaure inch. I know at my University they have Plastics Engineering and have produced something out of plastic that is stronger than steel.

I dont remember who it was, but some company that made CF hoods made a lil video clip where they drove a smaller car (early 90's civic if i remember correctly) over their CF hood and it never cracked or broke, just scratches on the corners where it was touching the pavement...I'd say its strong

yeah good quality carbon fiber is very tough. They use some of it in fighter jets. It wont break or tear and blend to a certain degree. Kinda like if ever try to open the thick plastic they incase in electronics. You can try to bend it, tear it and stomp on it but the plastic won't open, but when u get some scissors, it cuts like swiss cheese.

Theres folklore that they're supposed to flex instead of crumpling and decapitate the driver once the hinges give way, but I don't think that'd happen, it'd probably just crack a bit, or the hinges would break and the hood would fall off somewhere.
lol cf is weak, it will crack easily thats why i never go back to body shops that slams my hood to close it, I hate when a-holes do that, yet it doesnt even close n they still try slamming it, some people dont understand how fragile cf is, which is the main point of weight reduction
