Just read V-tec is no good!!!!
Just read V-tec is no good!!!!
i just read in the sport compact car that vtec isnt as good as everyone thought it was because before it kicks in in very high rpms all the rocker arms and things are just dead weight which cause slower starts than a civic with non vtec. all in all they said for racing racers are turning away from vtec!!
wow for the first time i'm agreeing with joe sad but true oh well dont believe anything the mags say cuz half of the time they say a lot
but they never actually done or seen it or tried it b4

u did say racing guyz. that means on the track but on the road vtec is very good.
thats for people that dont want extra weight n find that turbo is the way to go that way they dont have that extra pin and piston.
oh boi, i have VTEC and all the future honda's i will get will most likely have vtec. im a 100000% happy vtec guy!

No offence CivicRacer5 but I do not belive you get the point. In your little civic, you will not reach the speed where VTEC does not help you. To point out what the magazine said.... "In pure, high-rpm racing". I think the point they are trying to reach is VTEC engines that are well prepared to race, the VTEC will not really help but add deadweight. Not k&n air filtered engines....
Yup, Deu is right, they don't mean us going 60 70 on the highway, they mean race bred engines with vtec, eg. super/turbocharged vtec engine than can pull a civic 160

WTF is a Kife and im too lazy and busy to hold peoples hands and take them step by step on how they are wrong.
hmm..isn't the civic the best selling compact car for how many years running?
everybody drives civics..
we have the DX for ppl with less money
the LX for power everythin but not at much options
the Ex for more richer ppl
and the SI (not the 7th gen) for racers
the civc fits in every age category..u can be driving a civic from 18-100 years old and it will still be all good...

I think kife = kweef? However the hell you spell that word.
Anyway, I think they were talking about engines with more than 500hp in them. VTEC is good for street cars because it allows them to open their valves longer at high rpm's to let in more air and let out more exhaust gases. Then when you keep the rpm's below a certain speed it doesn't engage. It's basically an economy technology. It's just a camshaft with two profiles and a selenoid that gets activated that pushes the camshaft in and out to have the valves rest on either the economy portion of the camshaft or the speed portion of the camshaft.

thank you grey
hahaha
and if u expect to push 500 horse power out of the 1.7 sohc non vtec just be prepared to spend all ur money on it for the next 5 years or more

Wait, let me correct myself. Basically any engine that is built for just racing doesn't need VTEC. It would just make it more complex. All it needs is a really aggressive camshaft. It doesn't matter how efficient it is at the lower rpm's since the driver will keep the car at high rpm's anyway. Yeah, that's it.
Booohahaha: Hello Boo! I like your forum. Very organized. I visited not too long ago. I haven't posted yet though.

Grey is right. In a pure race engine that is capable of having a 11 or 12k redline, VTEC is pretty much useless. The camshafts in those engines are so damn aggressive, that space for VTEC would either be non-existant or a hinderance. In our street driven 7thgens, VTEC is a must to produce high end power similar to a similar displacement sized DOHC, all the while enjoying awesome mileage.
I think what Grey said should make sense to anyone...
with our economy cars, VTEC is just pure fun. From my experience, flooring 1st gear in my EX Civic gave me more of a rush than a non-VTEC Integra could do... however from what I've read, it doesn't kick in until you're in 3rd gear, correct? (So what's this better acceleration coming from?)
Dont be a hypocrate everyone read mags!
yup racing apps......but another dead-weight is your 50lbs Gut. take a look
at craig paisely 8.29s supra but it actually can reach up to 6s, when a monkey is

What? What does this have to do with the topic? "more richer"? Ahhhh, I shouldn't be an English minor.

If you are set up for the task of making a D16, D17, B16, or basically any Honda engine become a real racing engine with 500+ hp, then you pretty much better start from scratch. Otherwise...realize that VTEC is there for a reason. Honda engineers aren't dumb...but remember, the Civic isn't designed with racing in mind, but rather...brace yourselves...to be an economy car!

VTEC is one of the most ingenious ideas ever invented! how could you possibly say that it isn't good
VTEC is what gives hondas the flat torque curve, making the most of your engine. to whoever wrote that article
it all depends on what kind of racing your talking about, you cant just say VTEC is bad for racing because wasnt it developed by Honda for F1 or CART(one of those)? people generally find Honda's harder to street, drag race with their high reving VTEC engines with thier power at the high end than american cars(with low end power) because a car with VTEC requires more precise launching and shifting. I think VTEC is good at what it does providing power while you need it and being fuel efficient when not in VTEC.
